This installment begins with the events of 1863 -- with George Meade as the new Union commander and Robert E. Lee's troops under James "Old Pete" Longstreet, Richard "Baldie" Euwell, and A.P. Hill -- and takes an in-depth look into the three days of the Battle of Gettysburg, the surrender of Vicksburg to Ulysses S. Grant's troops, and the Battles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga. Other topics include President Abraham Lincoln's first federal draft call and its effects, including the New York City Antidraft Riots; the formation of the first black regiment under white commander Col. Robert Shaw and their bravery in battle; and women's roles in the war as caregivers, with profiles of Mary Livermore, Clara Barton, Mary Ann "Mother" Bickerdyke, and others. The program concludes with a description of the Dedication of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Pa.; and Sam Waterston, as Lincoln, reading the Gettysburg Address as photos of the cemetery and veterans are shown. Also included are the reflections of William Tecumseh Sherman, George Templeton Strong, and Frederick Douglas, among others; and photos taken on Lookout Mountain after the Union victory at Chattanooga.
