CIVIL WAR, THE, EPISODE 6: 1864: VALLEY OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH (TV)

Summary

The sixth episode in this nine-part documentary about the American Civil War, narrated by David McCullough. Subtitles include "Grant," "Lee," "In the Wilderness," "Move by the Left Flank," and "The Remedy." Civil War experts appearing include writer Shelby Foote and historian Ed Bearss. As this part begins, President Abraham Lincoln (Sam Waterston) promotes Ulysses S. Grant to Lieutenant General of the Union army. Grant's bloody spring campaign begins, with Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. Despite defeats and heavy losses, Grant refuses to retreat, advancing with Gen. George Meade's Army of the Potomac on Robert E. Lee's army until fighting stalls just outside of Richmond. As the program concludes, William Tecumseh Sherman advances on Joseph E. Johnson's Georgian troops until they stall just north of Atlanta. With increasing anti-war sentiment, Lincoln faces a sure loss in the upcoming election without a decisive Union victory. Included are profiles of Grant, Lee, and Sherman, revealing the basic war strategies of each. Army hospital conditions are examined, with profiles on Walt Whitman and Dorothea Dix. Descriptions of soldiers preparing themselves for death are given, and a series of photos of "Dr. Bunnelle's Embalming" methods are shown. This installment also includes letters of a former slave who has been accused of trying to steal his daughter from his former owner.
