CIVIL WAR, THE, EPISODE 9: 1865: THE BETTER ANGELS OF OUR NATURE (TV)

Summary

The final episode in this nine-part documentary about the American Civil War, narrated by David McCullough. Subtitles in this episode include "Assassination," "Useless, Useless," "The Picklocks of Biographers," and "Was It Not Real." Civil War experts appearing include writer Shelby Foote, historians Barbara Fields and Stephen B. Oates, and former Congressman James Symington. Events covered include Abraham Lincoln's assassination and burial; the capture and deaths of John Wilkes Booth and his accomplices; final skirmishes of the war, such as Johnston's surrender to Sherman and Jefferson Davis' capture and imprisonment; and the victory parade of the Union army for the new president. Statistics of military casualities and survivors are given; and the postwar condition of the towns of Deer Isle, Maine, and Clarksville, Tennessee, are discussed, as are the remaining lives of survivors Sam Watkins and Elisha Hunt Rhodes. Other war survivors profiled include William Tecumseh Sherman, Mary Chesnut, Walt Whitman, George McClellan, and Frederick Douglass, as well as Mathew Brady, Mary Todd Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Nathan Bedford Forest, George Pickett, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, and others. Experts offer final reflections on the war and its legacy for the United States. Film clips include a 1913 reunion of Gettysburg veterans, and "Gettysburg: 1863-1938" by Paramount News, with the voice of Gene Marshall on the 75th anniversary of Gettysburg.
