PRETTY GOOD NIGHT AT CARNEGIE HALL, A (TV)
Summary
Filmed live at Carnegie Hall, this program features Garrison Keillor, host of the popular radio series "A Prairie Home Companion," with special guest artist Chet Atkins. Keillor speaks and sings about the character of Midwestern life and values; being a writer; and moving first to Denmark and then to New York. Keillor performs several gospel hymns with The Hopeful Gospel Quartet (singers Kate MacKenzie and Robin and Linda Williams in addition to himself), accompanied on some by Butch Thompson on the piano. Hymns performed include "Now the Day Is Over," "There Is a Fountain," and "The Lord Will Make a Way Somehow." Atkins joins the group for a performance of "Hello, Love" and "Let's Go to That Land." Robin and Linda Williams perform their song "All Broken Hearts Are the Same," and Atkins returns to play the guitar and reminisce about his musical life and his father. The Hopeful Gospel Quartet then sings a medley of gospel songs a capella and is joined by instrumentalists for the song "Jordan." Keillor, dressed in the uniform of the Sons of Canute Lodge, recites the oath of membership with the audience, sings the lodge hymn, and shares the latest news from Lake Wobegon. The program concludes with a final gospel tune featuring the entire cast.
