NOVA: THE MIRACLE OF LIFE (TV)

Summary

One in this series of science documentaries. This program illustrates the process of human reproduction and the beginning of life through the use of magnified photography.

The documentary explores such topics as the beginning of life on Earth, cells and DNA, the male and female reproductive cycles, conception, gestation, and birth. Included is photography of an egg travelling through the female reproductive organs and a sperm travelling to an egg.

Using extreme magnification (.5 million times actual size), the egg is shown being impregnated by the sperm. The first film of early cell division in the human embryo is then shown, and the gestation process is illustrated. The program concludes with footage of an actual birth.

Acquisition and cataloging of this program was made possible by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. (This program contains graphic images; viewer discretion is advised.)
