FRONTLINE WITH JUDY WOODRUFF: COMRADES: SOLDIER BOY {PART 10 OF 12} (TV)

Summary

One in this documentary series hosted by Judy Woodruff. Part ten of this 12-part special series produced for "Frontline" that portrays contemporary life in the Soviet Union by profiling individuals from a diversity of fields. By focusing on the life of a young man from Volgograd in the Russian Republic who has been drafted into service, this part explores the processes of recruitment and enlistment in the Soviet Army. The man is shown from the day he receives his draft notice through his daily routine and training at a camp located in Lvov in the Ukraine. At the camp, he and other recruits are shown trying on uniforms, getting their heads shaved, and undergoing training. The young man featured is also shown with his family prior to his leaving for duty and at a ceremony held upon completion of his training. Included in this part is a panel discussion led by "Frontline" series host Judy Woodruff, with Richard Denton, "Comrades" series producer; David K. Shipler, author of the book "Russia: Broken Idles, Solemn Dreams"; and Paul Quinn-Judge, Moscow correspondent for the Christian Science Monitor. Topics discussed include the following: the making of the "Comrades" series and how this topic was selected; the changes taking place under Gorbachev's leadership and how they compare to the pre-Gorbachev era; and the challenges that lie ahead for the Soviet Union.
