A Day at the Beach:

Defining Jack Bauer: Moments 7-12

A Day at the Beach: CONTINUES...

7. Jack Tells Kim to Shoot Gary Matheson (Day 2: 5:00 a.m.-6:00 a.m.)

“Again. I want you to shoot him again. Shoot him again now, Kim. Shoot him again. Now.”

Kim returns to the Matheson home, where she had been an au pair at the start of Day 2. Wife-killer and kidnapper Gary Matheson (Billy Burke) shows up, and a scuffle ensues. Kim manages to knock him out and calls Jack, asking what to do. He tells her to shoot him. Terrified, Kim finally complies. Jack then coldly commands her to shoot him again. Father knows best.

8. Jack Kills Nina (Day 3: 2:00 a.m.-3:00 a.m.)

“You don't have any more useful information, do you, Nina?”

After murdering Teri Bauer and being implicated in both the nuclear bomb plot of Day 2 and the sale of the killer Cordilla virus of Day 3, Nina Myers finally gets her comeuppance. She tries to escape from CTU, but Kim stops her in the room where Nina had killed her mother. Jack arrives, and shoots Nina before she can harm Kim. Dying, she tries to tell Jack that she still has useful information, but Jack doesn’t care. He unloads his gun into her.

9. Jack Kills Chappelle (Day 3: 6:00 a.m.-7:00 a.m.)

“God forgive me.”

Blackmailed into ordering the death of CTU boss Ryan Chappelle (Paul Schulze) by virus-wielding terrorist Stephen Saunders (Paul Blackthorne), President Palmer entrusts Jack with the horrible deed. After a futile last-minute effort to find Saunders, and with Chappelle unable to commit the act himself, Jack shoots his boss in the head. Overall, this is one of the show’s saddest and most moving moments, and one of Jack’s most unforgivable actions.

10. Jack Threatens Stephen Saunders’ Daughter (Day 3: 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.)

“When your daughter is infected, I'm gonna make you watch her die.”

Jack threatens to bring the innocent daughter, Jane (Alexandra Lydon), of Day 3 terrorist mastermind Stephen Saunders into the hotel where he has unleashed the killer Cordilla virus unless Saunders reveals the locations of the eleven missing vials. Saunders cries for Jack to leave his daughter alone. Jane and her hazmat-suit-wearing captors almost make it through the quarantine zone before Saunders finally breaks.

11. Jack Hacks off Chase’s Hand (Day 3: 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m.)

Jack and his partner Chase (James Badge Dale) follow the last virus courier into a school. Chase secures the virus from the suspect, but only after attaching the contraption containing the virus to his hand. Jack can’t figure out how to open it, and with only seconds left on the contraption’s timer, he chops off Chase’s hand with a fire axe and throws the device into a refrigerator just as it goes off. Did I mention that Chase was dating Kim Bauer?

12. Jack Breaks Down (Day 3: 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m.)

After the horrific events of Day 3, including the murder of Ryan Chappelle and overcoming a heroin addiction, Jack breaks down and cries in his car before answering a phone call asking him to report back to CTU for debriefing.
