A Real Political Maverick: Campaigning Differently

The late Governor Ann Richards was thoroughly her own woman: feisty and fiery, she took on the special interests and corporate power of Texas. This timely and entertaining documentary from Keith Patterson and Jack Lofton explores how a straight-talking Texas gal traded her late nights with Willie Nelson and the Austin music scene for the Governor’s Mansion. Her friends and colleagues, including Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, Dan Rather, and President Bill Clinton, share their personal recollections of the outspoken and often outrageous activist. Richards embodied a new progressive Texas, but was defeated in her reelection bid by the young and inexperienced George W. Bush, whom she called “Shrub” and whose father she famously said was “born with a silver foot in his mouth.” Any young politician who wants to do things differently should study this inspiring portrait of Richards, which received a writing prize at the SilverDocs Festival. Could an Ann Richards run today?
