The Museum of Television & Radio and the Online Publishers Association Present OPT IN to Advertising’s New Age

Only Los Angeles Presentation from February 15 to May 14, 2006

Los Angeles, CA—The Museum of Television & Radio will host the Online Publishers Association's (OPA) only Los Angeles engagement of OPT IN to Advertising's New Age, a first-of-its-kind interactive traveling exhibit from February 15 to May 14, 2006, in the Bell Family Gallery in Beverly Hills.  Created by the OPA, the unique exhibit focuses on the history and future of advertising with a selection of seminal creative works from print, radio, television, and online advertising, from the eighteenth century to today.

Nearly two hundred advertisements will be featured in the exhibit including: excerpts from early radio commercials; classic television commercials such as "Mikey Likes It" for Life Cereals; and current interactive online ads from Audi, Coca Cola, Absolut, HP, and the U.S. Army, among others.  The exhibited advertisements are drawn mostly from the archives of The One Club, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of excellence in advertising, with a selection of radio ads from the Radio Advertising Bureau and the Radio-Mercury Awards.

Visitors engage with the ads within four interactive stations representing each featured medium—print, radio, television, and online. They will be able to view great milestones in print ads from the 1800s to the present day, relive memorable and beloved television ads, listen to famed radio ads from as far back as the 1920s, and then experience the evolution of online ads. At the end of the exhibit, there is an interactive opportunity to create an ad about the visitor's OPT IN to Advertising's New Age experience. By simply answering a few questions about the exhibit at a computer station, a "virtual creative director" uses that insight to create and play an ad that is uniquely tailored to the visitor. Additionally, the exhibit is presented against a backdrop displaying the historical, cultural, and technological context of each medium—providing a unique look how various world events were reflected in advertising.

OPT IN to Advertising's New Age is being presented by The Museum of Television & Radio and the Online Publishers Association in partnership with The One Club.

Admission is free in Los Angeles. Admission to OPT IN to Advertising's New Age is included with the Museum's suggested donation: Members free; $10.00 for adults; $8.00 for senior citizens and students; and $5.00 for children under fourteen. Also, the Museum will be showcasing advertising highlights from its collection in one of the theaters during the exhibit.
