GREAT PERFORMANCES: DANCE IN AMERICA: CHOREOGRAPHY BY BALANCHINE, PART 4 (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dance programs. This program, hosted by Edward Villella, features members of the New York City Ballet performing a number of ballets choreographed by George Balanchine. The first ballet, "Ballo della Regin," features Merrill Ashley and Robert Weiss. The ballet is based on the third act of Giuseppi Verdi's opera "Don Carlos." Next, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Patricia McBride dance a pas de deux based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" to Georges Bizet's "Jeux d'Enfants." Following this performance is a three-part tribute to the music of Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky, with a medley of dances that Balanchine selected specifically for this program. Tchaikovsky's "Elegie," from his "Suite No. 3," which features Karin von Aroldingen and Sean Lavery, is followed by the "Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux" with McBride and Baryshnikov. This pas de deux was originally written for "Swan Lake," but it was never choreographed until Balanchine resurrected it. The program concludes with "Allegro Brillante," from Tchaikovsky's "Third Piano Concerto," danced by Suzanne Farrell and Peter Martins.
