GREY'S ANATOMY: NEW HISTORY (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, Izzie makes a surprising return to Seattle with an elderly former teacher, Dr. Singer, and begs Meredith to sneak him in to see Derek, as he is experiencing confusion and dementia. Meredith tells Izzie that they were all worried about her, but she refuses to see her former co-workers, particularly her estranged husband Alex. Elsewhere, Cristina rebuffs Jackson’s attempts to talk about their kiss and meets up with Owen, who says he got her a “present”: a new cardio attending, Dr. Teddy Altman, with whom he served in Iraq. Cristina is less than impressed by Teddy’s resume and wants to “exchange” her, but Owen encourages her to give her a chance. Adele arrives at the hospital looking for Richard, and Bailey finds him asleep in an on-call room. She wakes him up and hurries him off to do an emergency surgery, and when Adele sees their intimate interaction, she demands to know if Bailey is having an affair with her husband. Shocked, Bailey denies it, and Callie tries to explain that Richard is Bailey's non-romantic “work husband,” as Mark is hers, but Adele says he is acting like he did during his affair with Ellis Grey and suspects that he is up to something.
Izzie requests that various tests be performed on Singer, and she is soon spotted by Cristina, who asks if she has been keeping up with her cancer treatments, and Alex, who looks stunned and retreats without a word. Singer’s test results come back normal and Percy scoffs at Izzie’s demands for a spinal tap, and she goes so far as to threaten to reveal his crush on Reed if he does not help her, and he gives in. Meredith gives Alex an update on Izzie, but he does not reply. Cristina works with Teddy on a patient and continues to doubt Teddy’s abilities, but when she appeals to Richard and Bailey, Bailey points out that she has “driven off” three cardio attendings so far and she is possibly the problem herself. Singer’s spinal tap results come back normal, and he experiences a moment of lucidity, leading Derek to reevaluate. He discovers that Singer has a hard-to-diagnose condition called normal pressure hydrocephalus, which can be fixed with a simple surgery, but Singer doubts he can afford it. Derek agrees to donate his time if Richard will agree to it. Bailey, who begins to suspect every woman in the hospital of being the Chief’s mistress, is distracted when Reed and Lexie show her Richard’s emergency patient, who is severely jaundiced, implying that Richard made a serious mistake in surgery.
At lunch, the doctors discuss Richard’s possible affair, and Teddy is surprised to realize that Owen is dating Cristina. Cristina expresses her dislike for “Desert Storm Barbie” to Meredith and then asks Alex about Izzie, causing him to leave the table. Izzie argues with Richard about the free surgery, saying she funded the clinic with her money from Denny, and Bailey observes them from afar, suspecting the worst. Later, Teddy and Arizona meet a young boy with breathing problems, and Teddy snaps at Cristina when she questions her order to book an OR for him. In the boy’s surgery, Teddy’s diagnosis of a heart condition is proved correct, and she allows Cristina to assist. She soon makes a mistake, but Teddy calmly helps her to fix it, and Cristina begins to reconsider her idea of Teddy. Alex finally confronts Izzie, who snaps that she cannot forgive him for getting her fired, but he rightfully points out that she did not talk to him before leaving, and says he in turn cannot forgive her assumptions and distrust of him. Bailey privately tells Richard that she fixed his mistake and asks what is troubling him, but he refuses to elaborate, only saying that he is taking a step back from surgery for the time being. Singer’s surgery goes well, but he says he will not return to teaching high school, and Izzie ponders her own future as well. Teddy and Owen talk, and she admits that she had hoped he would call her if he ever split with his former fiancée, Beth, but now realizes that her impression of their relationship was just “a story” she made up for herself and can now let go. When she leaves, Cristina thanks Owen for her “present,” and he tells her that Teddy joined the army when her best friend died on 9/11. Alex drowns his sorrows at Joe’s Bar, accompanied by Meredith. Richard, a recovering alcoholic, is revealed to have fallen off the wagon and is drinking vodka at the bar, reflecting on all his recent mistakes, observed by Meredith. Includes commercials.
