CAROL BURNETT SHOW, THE {JOEL GREY, CASS ELLIOT} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy/variety programs starring Carol Burnett. This program features special guests Joel Grey and "Mama" Cass Elliot. The episode begins as Burnett takes the stage and chats with the audience, taking questions from a twelve-year-old with a crush on co-star Lyle Waggoner and a visitor from Scotland, among others. Burnett then introduces Grey, star of the recent film "Cabaret," who performs "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard." In the first comedy sketch, Burnett portrays the ditzy wife of a political candidate who speaks for her hoarse-voiced husband during an interview and immediately damages his chances with her candid, politically-incorrect comments. Elliot performs a medley of "Oh, To Be A Movie Star" and "Life is Just A Bowl of Cherries," and in the next sketch, Burnett portrays a chatty woman who recognizes an old high school "friend" at a café and harangues the woman into an argument about their past squabbles. Following this, Grey and Korman portray two eager puppies at a pet shop who vow to be adopted together or not at all, cementing their bond with a canine-themed friendship song.
Next, Elliot attempts to teach Burnett how to sing a round, and though she struggles with the harmony at first, they soon settle into a medley of traditional folk songs including "Row, Row, Row Your Boat," "Frère Jacques," "Kookaburra," "The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond," "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean," "The Man on the Flying Trapeze," "Drink, Drink, Drink," "You Are My Sunshine," "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain" and "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." After this, Burnett and Elliot portray "two foreign film festival freaks" who attend comically reenacted versions of "The Bicycle Thief," "And God Created Woman," "Seven Samurai," and a badly-translated dubbed version of a movie about a sailor's adventures with a questionable woman. Finally, they watch "Heist," a new film dubbed in seven different languages, set in many different glamorous countries around the world and featuring a complex plot involving the theft of a large diamond. Burnett then closes the show by making an appeal for pollution prevention, singing her signature good-night song and adding her guests' autographs to her guest book. Commercials deleted.
