ER: 300 PATIENTS {ROUGH CUT} (TV)
Summary
A rough cut of the 300th episode in this series of dramas about the emergency room team of an inner-city Chicago hospital. In this episode, as Christmas draws near, Abby and Luka deal with the recent passing of Luka’s father and prepare to journey to Croatia for the funeral. Abby tries to put on a brave face for her husband’s sake, but when Neela catches her drinking in the middle of the day, she blows up at her and reveals how far she has fallen into her old addiction. At the hospital, chaplain Julie Dupree reaches out to Abby, and though she dismisses her sentiments at first, she eventually accepts that she has to ask for help and has a heartfelt conversation with Luka where she apologizes for causing problems in their marriage and vows to get help for her alcoholism, sending him and their son Joe off to Croatia without her.
At the hospital, an all-too-realistic nativity scene goes awry when a camel bites Dubenko. The hospital is hectic and busy, and Morris bets that they will hit three hundred patients by the end of the day, with Frank, Pratt and Gates telling him it will never happen. Julie comes by and announces that she’s holding a series of blessings and ceremonies for the hospital staff, but most of the ER doctors are uninterested, except for a flirtatious Gates. Eventually most of the doctors stop by Julie’s séance, which honors the patients they’ve lost and the work that they do, and are surprised to find themselves affected by memories of patients who had significant impacts on them. However, they are interrupted by a series of incoming trauma cases, including that of a woman severely injured in a car accident while riding with her son Lowell, who has Down’s Syndrome. When the staff contacts the woman’s husband, they discover that he had no idea that his wife was in contact with their son, whom he thought they gave up immediately after he was born. As the woman’s condition deteriorates, the doctors struggle to explain her Do Not Resuscitate order to her son, who meets his father for the first time as his mother is dying. Pratt is particularly affected by the case, and reveals that his own mother died when he was young.
Elsewhere, on her way to an educational paramedic conference, Sam’s ambulance is struck by a car, and they quickly realize that the driver seems drunk and hit a little girl as well. Sam fights to save both the driver and the girl while fighting off an angry crowd on onlookers. At the hospital, she proves her medical talents as she works on the girl, and shares a sweet moment with Gates after he comes to her aid when an angry bystander attempts to attack her in the trauma room. At the end of the day, Julie finally finishes her ceremony and honors the doctors, and a desperate Morris goes to extreme lengths to “achieve” his goal of three hundred patients and win his bet. Commercials deleted.
