MODERN FAMILY: FIZBO (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, the family members gather in a hospital, with flashbacks telling who became a patient, and the nature of the injury.

As the story begins, Claire and Phil voice their guilt over half-hearted attempts to celebrate Luke's birthday in previous years. They decide to gather the family and throw “the best birthday party of all time” for Luke's fast-approaching big day. A rock-climbing wall and zip-line soon are visible in the front yard, and a reptile handler is booked to thrill the guests. Claire excitedly sets up an arts and crafts table to make “comb sheaths,” but finds that few share her enthusiasm for the item.

As Jay prepares to give Luke a crossbow, Manny seeks out his advice; a girl named Bianca will be attending Luke’s party, and he wants her to notice him. Jay recommends being “the funny guy,” but Manny’s attempts at humor fall flat and he sulks in the party’s inflatable castle. There, Gloria encourages him to simply be himself.

Over Mitchell’s protests, Cameron revives his old clown identity of “Fizbo” for Luke’s party. En route to the event, Mitchell stops to get gas, during which a burly fellow grazes him at the pump with his car. The man refuses to apologize until “Fizbo” steps into the fray. Though Mitchell subsequently changes his tune about "Fizbo," the character's presence at the party deeply unnerves Phil, revealing his lifelong fear of clowns.

Meanwhile, Haley’s boyfriend Dylan flirts with the comely reptile handler, prompting a jealous Haley to release a caged scorpion to create a distraction. “Fizbo” sees the creature and flees, accidentally setting off Jay’s crossbow, which punctures the inflatable castle. Bianca is trapped inside until Manny bravely saves her. In the confusion, Luke slips on the beads from Claire’s arts and crafts table, injuring his arm.

Later, a now-bandaged Luke join his family in the hospital waiting room, happy that everyone came to celebrate his birthday and excited at his new “gift:” the cast for his arm. Commercials deleted.
