PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEY AFTER DARK: THE APPRENTICE {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's Paley After Dark series. Held at The Paley Center in New York, this evening honors "The Apprentice," the reality show that is actually a week-by-week job interview in which one contestant will become "The Apprentice" to real estate magnate Donald Trump. Pat Mitchell (president and CEO, The Paley Center) offers opening remarks and introduces the evening's moderator, Erin Burnett (anchor, CNBC). Mitchell then sets up a package of highlights from the show's upcoming tenth season premiere.
Clips include: Trump explaining how America's ongoing economic crisis motivated him to choose sixteen "victims of the recession" as the new season's competitors; the candidates' revelations about going from high-powered jobs to more humble positions or unemployment; the candidates sizing each other up; Trump's opening speech in the boardroom and opting for a men-versus-women contest; the teams' choices for project managers; Donald giving the teams their first task: to design and build an ultra-modern work space; adviser Ivanka Trump assessing the men's efforts; adviser Donald Trump Jr. assessing the women's efforts; growing dissension within each team; and Trump telling the teams his thoughts on their completed projects.
After the screening, Burnett takes the stage with the panelists: executive producer/creator Mark Burnett; executive producer/host Donald Trump; and advisers Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr.
The panelists touch on such topics as: why Donald thinks the show's current season is its strongest; how Mark selected the contestants; the differences between the new season and celebrity-based versions of the show; how each contestant benefits by being on the show; if the tasks in Season Ten are harder than normal; how personalities change "when the camera is rolling"; if contestants in the current group rival the stunts of Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth in Season One; why a men-versus-women dynamic works best on the show; if the shows are scripted; the contestants' lack of sleep while performing tasks; what the winner of this year's contest will receive; the show's cinematography; Donald's reaction to working with his children, Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric; how "social media" like Twitter and Google has affected the show; plans for the celebrity-based Season Eleven; and how celebrities have gained "star power" from participating on "The Apprentice."
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: what decisions go into the show's editing; production values on the series; ongoing points of contention about the show between Donald and Mark; if Ivanka and Donald Jr. root for certain candidates; accomplishments of past "Apprentice" winners like Bill Rancic; the criteria used to determine a winner; if past celebrity contestants like Gene Simmons are kept on the show to make "great television"; why Donald's "memory skills" are essential to the show; how many hours in Donald's typical work week go toward "The Apprentice"; the process of winnowing thousands of potential contestants to sixteen; the genesis for the series; Mark's history with reality television shows such as "Survivor"; and who conceives the tasks for the teams.
