BIG LOVE: DAMAGE CONTROL {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The second season premiere in this drama series about polygamist Bill Henrickson, who has three wives, three families, and three houses in a Salt Lake City suburb. In this episode, Nicki and Margene attempt to split up the chores as Bill scrambles to discover who "outed" Barb as a polygamist at the Mother of the Year ceremony, causing her to refuse to leave the house. He first fixates on his assistant Wendy, urging Don to tap her phone, while elsewhere Barb is upset to find that the school seemingly does not want her back as a teacher in the wake of the scandal. Bill talks to Joey and Lois about Alby, still in serious condition after being poisoned by Wanda, wondering if they should simply "help" Wanda rather than allowing her to be arrested. Barb anxiously tells Sarah that she wishes her to have choices in her life, including college, but Sarah urges her not to worry. Nicki and Margene squabble about shopping duties, and Barb is upset when Bill suggests sitting down to dinner with their neighbors, the Martins, to determine whether or not at they are the culprits. Margene confides to Nicki that Pam and Carl are indeed to blame because of her own mistakes, but Nicki assures her that she is not to blame.
Roman and Adaleen watch the news reports about the hunt for Orlean, angry that his greed may endanger the entire Juniper Creek community. Patsy dramatically preaches about Roman's "prophet" status as Wanda is publicly questioned about Alby, and though she denies any involvement, Alby arrives in their midst and demands to know who else – besides Lois – conspired in his would-be murder. Barb frets that she has lost her job permanently and is ruined in the community because of the outing, but Bill puts his foot down and demands that she attend the dinner with the Martins to help root out the conspiracy against them. Joey and Lois call Bill in a panic about Alby's accusations, begging him to "manage this crisis" more efficiently, and Bill decides to enlist the help of a lawyer. Barb leaves the family home and goes to stay with Don, though Nicki and Margene plead with her to return home for the sake of the family. The news reports that a "credible tip" has been established regarding Orlean, and Barb signs up for classes at the local college as Margene offers to handle the dinner with the Martins in her place, admitting that she is not sure that she can remain in the marriage without Barb.
Don invites Bill to his prayer group, sure that he needs divine intervention to heal his fractured family, and when Adaleen updates Nicki about Alby, Nicki admits that Barb has left, meaning that she herself may become "first wife" any day. She admits her desire to "teach Wendy a lesson" for harming the family, and Adaleen gives her a present from Roman: a gun. Joey and his lawyer visit Roman, suggesting that Alby's case should be handled by the state, not by Juniper Creek, and Bill tells Nicki and Margene not to be "alarmist" when they panic that Barb truly does not intend to return. Wendy realizes that Don and Bill are eavesdropping on her and accuses them both of harassment, though Bill makes it clear that he will defend Home Plus' reputation against her "allegations" at all costs. Seeing that her mother wishes to avoid Bill, Sarah offers to bring some of Barb's belongings to her, and Roman tells Joey that he will assist Wanda and "make the whole investigation go away" in exchange for votes in an upcoming UEB election, suggesting that he will "reassign" Wanda to another husband if Joey does not comply. Sarah, as "Laurie," attends a meeting for ex-Mormons and meets the kindly Scott, and Barb tells her sister-wives that she wishes to pursue a master's degree in social work. Robert Sheale advises Bill to let the "outing" matter go, reminding him that he has "embarrassed" the community with his technically illegal behavior, and Bill, after praying over the matter, visits Barb and begs her to reconsider, telling her that their family is "not a mistake." Roman calls Bill to offer his "condolences" on the scandal, and when Bill visits the Martins, Barb joins the dinner after all, dismissing her Mother of the Year disqualification as mere confusion over perceived nepotism and suggesting that Margie broke up with them because of her own pregnancy. After the dinner, Bill sincerely apologizes for "pushing" Barb into their polygamous lifestyle, but he promises her that "something good" will come of the confusion, and she agrees to return home.
