Summary
One in this comedy series about the cast and production team of a sketch comedy television show. In this episode, Jack meets with a group of German businessmen to negotiate the potential purchase of a large European cable company and books Gladys Knight, C.C.'s favorite artist, to appear on "TGS" as a show of his affection for her. Tracy sets up a cappuccino machine in the lobby, and Liz takes Jack's advice and considers buying her very first property. Jack suffers through a number of unamusing German programs and then "delegates" the task to Liz, and when Tracy encourages a fretful Kenneth to enjoy some "devil's-temperature" coffee beverages, Kenneth very quickly becomes a caffeine addict. Liz makes an immediate offer on a high-class apartment, and Jack and C.C. meet up in a rustic Pennsylvania mining town that is positioned exactly between New York City and D.C. to share a rare business-free day together. Liz assigns a very jittery Kenneth to watch the German shows instead and then heads to a meeting with the stern co-op board of her potential new building, where she nervously attempts to convince them to approve her application.
Liz frets to Jenna that the meeting went badly, and when the network executives arrive early, Liz is forced to take over in Jack's absence and employ her very rusty German skills in conversing with them. Jack and C.C. finally head back to their respective cities, and Tracy has the cappuccino machine removed, seeing that it has permanently "changed" the mild-mannered Kenneth. Impatient for an answer, Liz panics and repeatedly phones the co-op board, and in the morning Jack informs her that she confused her verbs and actually offered to sell NBC to the Germans. He decides that they cannot "have it all" and must choose between work and love, but though he calls C.C. and offers to devote his life to her, he ends up putting her on hold when Geiss calls and realizes that they are incompatible. Liz finds that the co-op board has selected someone else for the apartment and, haunted by his coffee "bender," Kenneth declares that he is returning to Georgia for good. Gladys Knight is annoyed as everyone breaks into song as they beg him to stay, but Kenneth soon finds that he missed the "midnight train" anyway. Commercials deleted.
