LOST: ACROSS THE SEA (TV)
Summary
One in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters’ past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. In this episode, many centuries ago, a pregnant woman, Claudia, washes up on the island after a shipwreck. She encounters another woman, who claims that she is alone and also ended up there "by accident." Claudia goes into labor and the woman assists her in delivering a son, Jacob, but they are both surprised when another boy is also born, after which the woman kills Claudia with a rock. Thirteen years later, the unnamed "Boy in Black" finds a board game on the beach, and Jacob tells "Mother" about it against his brother's wishes. Mother tells the Boy in Black that there is "nowhere else" beyond the island, assuring him that he need never worry about death. Later, however, the boys are shocked to encounter hunters in the jungle, and Mother admits that they live elsewhere on the island and are dangerous, though adds that the two boys can never hurt one another. She takes them to a cave filled with light and tells them that they must never enter it, hinting that the light within is essential to mankind's existence and must be protected by one of them, as greedy people will surely come to the island and attempt to take it.
The Boy in Black then has a vision of Claudia, who takes him to the other shipwreck survivors' village and explains that Mother has lied to him all along. Jacob, outraged, refuses to believe it, but the Boy rejects Mother and departs to live with the "others" despite her warnings that he can never leave the island. Mother admits to Jacob that she killed Claudia and kept the boys with her so that they would "stay good," and he agrees to stay with her. Thirty years later, the adult Jacob and the Man in Black continue their secret meetings, and the Man reveals that "his people" are indeed evil and selfish as Mother stated, but adds that they are also smart and have found places on the island where metal behaves strangely. Hearing of this from Jacob, Mother spies on the people digging a well and visits the Man, and he shows her that he has made a wheel and a "system" that will allow him to use the water and the light in the long-hidden cave to finally leave the island. Heartbroken, Mother bids him farewell and then knocks him unconscious, and she takes Jacob to the cave, which she calls "the heart of the island," and bids him to drink a mysterious potion that will make him the official protector of the cave until he someday finds a "replacement." Though sure that she would have preferred his brother for the job instead, Jacob obeys.
The Man awakens at the well, now buried and destroyed, and is distraught to see the village burned and all the inhabitants slaughtered. He finds Mother and fatally stabs her, and she thanks him and reiterates her love for him as she dies. Jacob arrives and furiously beats his brother, dragging him to the stream and tossing him into the cave. Moments later, the "black smoke monster" emerges from the light, and Jacob is saddened to see his twin's corpse lying nearby. He carries him back home and buries him alongside Mother, and many years later, Jack, Kate and Locke arrive on the island find the black-and-white game pieces as well as the skeletons of "Adam and Eve."
