LOST: THE INCIDENT {PARTS 1 AND 2} {FIFTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The fifth season finale in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters’ past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. In this two-part episode, an unknown man in white relaxes on the beach and spots a ship out at sea. He is joined by a man in black, who calmly states that he will someday find a "loophole" that will allow him to kill the other man: Jacob. They are revealed to be beside the full and unbroken foot state, a figure of Taweret. In the past, a seemingly ageless Jacob intervenes when a young Kate and Tom are caught shoplifting. On the submarine, Kate explains her plan to stop Jack from detonating the hydrogen bomb, but Sawyer seems unconcerned about the island's fate. On the island, Sayid reads through Faraday's instructions and explains that the large bomb's core will be enough to stop "the incident," stating that they must take it to the Swan station within two hours of removing it. At the Swan, Dr. Chang warns Radzinsky against drilling into the pocket of energy, but Radzinsky remains determined to make a scientific breakthrough. In the present day, Ben admits to Sun that he has never actually met Jacob, whom they are seeking, and Richard questions Locke about how he is somehow alive after being murdered by Ben. Locke hints that Jacob was involved, and then notes that they must "deal with" the remaining Ajira flight passengers soon.

Elsewhere, Ilana and Bram debate if Frank is a "candidate" as they carry the mysterious crate onto the beach, and Frank is shocked by its contents. In the past, Jacob speaks with a young Sawyer as he writes his fateful letter after his parents' funeral, though his uncle reminds him that "what's done is done." On the sub, Juliet decides that they cannot let the island's inhabitants die and forces the captain to resurface, while on the island Ben admits to Locke that he saw Alex's ghost at the cabin, and Locke announces that he, Ben, will be the one to kill Jacob. In the past, Jacob briefly distracts Sayid as Nadia is hit by a car, and she asks him to "take her home" before dying. Richard knocks out Eloise and tells Jack and Sayid that they are on their own with the bomb, and they attempt to escape through the chaotic Dharma village by disguising themselves as workers. Roger recognizes Sayid as Ben's would-be murderer, however, and shoots him despite his protests that he is carrying a bomb. After a shootout, Jin and Hurley arrive in a van and rush Sayid and Jack towards the Swan. Sawyer, Kate and Juliet paddle back to the island and encounter Rose and Bernard, who declare that they are "retired" and are unconcerned with the idea of dying, wishing only to be together. Bram and Ilana inform a wary Frank that they are "the good guys," while in the past Jacob appears to a heavily-bandaged Ilana at a Russian hospital and asks for her help. Ilana inspects Jacob's empty cabin and finds a map of Taweret, ordering the place burnt down as they leave.

Jacob speaks to Locke seconds after he is pushed from the window by his father, assuring him that "everything will be all right." On the island, Ben admits to Locke that he only pretended to speak to an invisible Jacob back at the cabin, embarrassed that he had never really met him, and Locke points out that he has ample reason to want him dead. Sun finds Charlie's Drive Shaft ring in Aaron's old cradle, and in the past, Jacob stops by Jin and Sun's wedding and blesses them in Korean. A grievously injured Sayid rigs the bomb to detonate on impact, but the van is stopped by Sawyer, Juliet and Kate. In the past, Jack is embarrassed when Christian urges him to "count to five" when he panics during a surgery, and Jacob aids him in retrieving an Apollo bar from the vending machine. Sawyer and Jack debate the "reset," with Jack hinting that he wants to fix things in order to reunite with Kate, and a furious Sawyer attacks him for destroying his blissful Dharmaville life with Juliet. Juliet then intervenes, however, declaring that she now agrees with Jack, willing to undo her life with Sawyer if it means never losing him. Phil calls Radzinsky and warns him about Jack's approach with the bomb, and Kate talks to Jack about her need to reunite Aaron with Claire by resetting the future, vowing to aid him in his mission.

Hurley reluctantly leaves jail and finds Jacob waiting for him in a taxi, and Jacob urges him to return to the island on the Ajira flight, suggesting that he is "blessed" rather than cursed. Sayid, dying, sends Jack off to the Swan with the bomb, while elsewhere Locke ignores Richard's protests and takes Ben into Jacob's home, the statue foot. Miles wonders if Jack's actions will in fact cause "the incident" rather than preventing it, and at the Swan, Sawyer holds Phil at gunpoint to protect Jack, having been convinced by Juliet. Jack shares a meaningful look with Kate and then drops the bomb into the pit – but it does not detonate. The electromagnetic energy is released and all of the nearby metal objects are dragged into the pit, including the chains around Juliet's waist. Sawyer and Kate try desperately to rescue her, but she is pulled into the ground. On the beach, Ilana's group arrives and "Ricardus" gives the correct answer to her cryptic question, and everyone is shocked when the contents of the box are revealed to be Locke's dead body. Inside the statue, "Locke" tells Jacob that he has found a loophole after all, revealing that he is really the Man in Black in Locke's form. Jacob tells Ben that he has a choice, but Ben is furious at Jacob's lack of interest in his lifelong obedience and stabs him, and Jacob manages to utter "they're coming" before the Man in Black kicks him into the fire. Juliet is revealed to be alive, though barely, at the bottom of the pit, and she desperately strikes the bomb with a rock and causes it to detonate, filling the scene with a blinding white light.
