CASTLE: A DEADLY AFFAIR {THIRD SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy-drama series about a New York Police Department detective who grudgingly lets a rugged mystery-books author help solve murder cases. In the third season premiere, Castle runs through a crime scene, narrowly avoiding gunfire, only to find himself in a stand-off with Beckett. Three days previously, at the precinct, Beckett notes that Castle said he would return from the Hamptons in the fall, but has not called or appeared. When they are called to a crime scene at which a woman, Chloe, was shot before falling out of a window, the detectives spy Castle in a nearby shop setting up for a book release, and Beckett is hurt that he returned without letting them know. When they investigate, they find that the victim was a chemistry teacher and had an address clutched in her hand when she died. Chloe's boyfriend, Evan, has no idea who would have hurt her, saying she was not involved in anything questionable. The detectives follow the address and are stunned to find Castle there with a gun in his hand, standing over the dead body of a sculptress named Maya. Beckett arrests Castle and interrogates him, and he swears that she was dead when he arrived. He claims that they did not date and he only purchased art from her, and that she called him to say she was in trouble, knowing of his connections with the police. It is soon revealed that the gun does not match either murder, and Beckett angrily sends Castle away. At home, Alexis reveals that a certain boy has not called her, saying he may have "missed his chance," and Castle ponders this. As the detectives struggle to find a connection between Chloe and Maya, Castle returns to the first crime scene and investigates on his own. Parish reveals that the victims had similar tattoos, and Ryan and Esposito discover that the same man called both women shortly before their deaths. When they arrive at his apartment, however, they find Castle there again and the man dead.
Castle protests that he used star-69 from Chloe's apartment and tracked down the man, Todd, who worked with vending machines, and found him dead. He is proven to have died hours before Castle arrived, and Beckett grudgingly allows Castle to work the case with her. They make a bet on who will find the connections between the victims first; if Castle wins, they will resume their partnership. Forensics reveal that Todd was indeed in Maya's apartment, though his fiancée claims not to know the women. She reveals that he recently got in trouble with a loan shark, but the man states that Todd paid him back in full. The police find that Todd, Maya and Chloe all received the same amount of money recently and frequented the same establishment, "KCBC." When the deposited prove untraceable, they track down the address of KCBC and find a bizarre circus-themed nightclub, run by one Kitty Canary. She and her husband explain that Chloe and Todd both had acts and Maya was a patron, revealing that she gave both women their tattoos and admitting that Evan was angry when he found out about Chloe's secret life. When they question him again, Evan swears his innocence and is confused when they mention the money, but Beckett remains suspicious.
Castle recognizes another nightclub patron from one of Maya's metal sculptures, and the man states that Maya borrowed a gun from him, knowing she was in danger after she found Todd murdered. He suggests that she was cooking methamphetamine, and Castle guesses that Chloe, the chemistry teacher, was in on it as well, "like that cable show." Parish disproves this theory, however, though she notes the strange chemicals on the bodies. When the murder weapon is found at Evan's apartment, he seems guilty, but the details do not add up. Castle and Beckett then realize that the three victims were in fact making counterfeit money using their respective talents, and both guess who the killer is. They catch Kitty and her husband trying to flee with the fake money, pointing out their contribution of tattoo ink for the bills and their planting of the gun at Evan's home, but they fire at the police and escape. Beckett gives Castle her gun and they chase the criminals, finally coming to a standoff—and shooting the perps behind one another. Later, they explain the details to the Captain and Beckett concedes defeat, accepting Castle as her partner again, though Esposito has his doubts. At home, Castle finds that Alexis has made up with her boyfriend, and Martha notes the importance of being "connected." Includes commercials.
