PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: AN EVENING WITH RULES OF ENGAGEMENT {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented by The Paley Center for Media’s Inside Media series. Held at The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles, this evening celebrates “Rules of Engagement,” a situation comedy television series about two couples, one recently engaged and another married, and their single friend. Craig Hitchcock (executive director, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles) offers opening remarks before introducing the evenings’ moderator, Chris Balish (co-host, ABC Disney’s “On the Red Carpet”). Balish offers his own remarks before introducing Tom Hertz (executive producer/creator), who introduces the episodes “Les-Bro” and “Mannequin Head Ball,” screened in their entirety. Topics of discussion include: the filming of the episode “Mannequin Head Ball”; the show’s origins in Hertz’s stand-up comedy routine; the process of developing the “Rules of Engagement” pilot; how Adam Sandler, actor and owner of the show’s production company, got Spade involved with the project; Hudson’s and Kajlich’s audition processes; the cast members on how they deal with fears of cancellation; Hertz on the difficulty of producing comedies on modern television; how the producers obtained Collins for her guest role on the show; Spade and Collins on working together; the show’s weekly production schedule; feedback from network executives; Kalyan on his transition from recurring guest star to series regular; the dynamic between Kalyan and Spade’s characters; and how the cast members influence rewrites to the show’s scripts.
