PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: INSIDE MEDIA: PSYCH! A TWIN PEAKS GATHERING {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented by The Paley Center for Media’s Inside Media series. Held at The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles, this evening features a tribute to the cult television series "Twin Peaks" via "Psych," a comedy/mystery series about a man whose acute observational skills convince others that he has psychic powers, allowing him to run a "psychic detective agency" in Santa Barbara with his best friend from childhood.
Craig Hitchcock (executive director, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles) offers opening remarks before introducing the evening’s moderator, Craig Tomashoff (executive editor, TV Guide magazine). Tomashoff brings “Psych” producer, co-writer, and cast member James Roday (Shawn Spencer) to the stage. Roday then sets up the episode, "Dual Spires," which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 104624).
Following the screening, Thomashoff introduces the panelists: Roday and fellow "Psych" cast members Timothy Omundson (Carlton Lassiter), Maggie Lawson (Juliet "Jules" O’Hara), Corbin Bernsen (Henry Spencer), and Dulé Hill (Burton “Gus” Guster); and "Twin Peaks" veterans Lenny Von Dohlen (Andrew Jackson/Harold Smith), Catherine E. Coulson (Woman with Wood/Margaret "Log Lady" Lanterman), Robyn Lively (Michelle Barker/Lana Budding Milford), Ray Wise (Peter Westley/Leland Palmer), and Sheryl Lee (Donna "Doc" Gooden/Laura Palmer).
The panel discusses topics which include: Roday's beliefs on how “Twin Peaks” impacted television; the origins of the “Psych” tribute episode; fashioning Sherilyn Fenn's "Twin Peaks" character of cherry-stem-twisting Audrey Horne into cherry-soda-obsessed Maudette Hornsby in "Dual Spires," then doing likewise for the six other "Peaks" co-stars; what convinced Lee to sign on for the episode; the reactions of “Twin Peaks” cast members to the "Dual Spires" concept; memories of working on "Twin Peaks"; if "Peaks" actors have kept in touch over the last twenty years; Lively's delight at playing the love interest for Dana Ashbrook (Bobby Briggs in "Twin Peaks" and Bob Barker in "Dual Spires"); the balance between humor and reverence in "Dual Spires”; additional "Dual Spires" scenes which were cut for timing; trying to create a "Psych" equivalent to the iconic "Twin Peaks" scene of Laura Palmer's body being discovered; Hill's "Twin Peaks” marathon to prepare for the episode; feedback on the episode from “Twin Peaks” co-creator David Lynch; if “Twin Peaks” cast members are still recognized by fans; the success of “Twin Peaks” festivals in London and the United States; Wise's reaction to finding out that his character was Laura Palmer’s murderer on “Twin Peaks”; how the unique style of “Twin Peaks” was maintained; Lee's recollections of being chosen to play Laura Palmer, despite her lack of acting experience; Coulson's memories of working with Lynch in his 1978 film “Eraserhead”; and speculation from the “Psych” cast about the show’s eventual conclusion.
Questions from the audience lead to a discussion of the following: why Roday began writing television scripts; if spinoffs or a sequel for “Twin Peaks” might be in the works; the ongoing popularity of “Twin Peaks” in Japan; what happened to the log which Coulson always carried on “Twin Peaks”; and Wise's desire to see the deleted scenes from the “Twin Peaks” big-screen prequel, “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.”
