FORGOTTEN, THE: DONOVAN DOE {SERIES FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The series finale in this dramatic crime series about a group of volunteer investigators in Chicago who work to identify anonymous bodies. In this episode, a child's skeleton is found in a box alongside several other items, and Grace tells Alex that the remains may be Lucy's. Tyler's reconstructive sketch seems to match Lucy's picture, and the team gets to work analyzing the clues found with the remains, including a puzzle that produces the name "Matthew Clarke." Matthew, a teenager, explains that the box is part of an Internet-based scavenger hunt, GloboCache, meaning that anyone aware of the game could have placed the bones there. Further investigation leads them to another spot and a mocking note from the killer bearing the acronym "LOTM." Grace reveals that the remains are definitely not Lucy's, but the team resolves to identify the dead girl all the same and Tyler traces the ladybug-shaped travel-hopper in the box to a GloboCache convention. They soon determine that one William Hollander was spotted near the site shortly before the bones were found, though Hollander claims ignorance and states that he left nothing behind at the site. Alex, however, is convinced of his guilt and confronts him privately at home, and Hollander smugly hints that he is indeed involved with Lucy's disappearance.

Tyler then finds that the killer has left clues to a "platinum" prize on the GloboCache website under Alex's name, presumably to taunt him. They trace the coordinates to a lake, and then to a cemetery, where a locked container is found to house another hopper belonging to one Stephanie Sommers of Philadelphia: the Jane Doe in the box. Alex and Candace travel to Philadelphia and meet Stephanie's aunt, who explains that the girl was kidnapped five years earlier, prompting her mother Karen to vanish and her father to commit suicide out of grief. Alex talks to Stephanie's young cousin, Troy, who admits that he kept her backpack from the day of her disappearance in the hopes of returning it to her someday, and Hollander is quickly arrested when his fingerprints are found on the items within.

Hollander confesses to her murder, but reveals that "LOTM" stans for "left one, took many" and bargains for reduced charges in exchange for information about his other victims. Alex vents his emotions to Candace, admitting that he is trying to force himself to accept Lucy's death despite the lack of clear evidence, but she urges him to remain hopeful. Maxine then finds Karen in Omaha, and when Alex and Candace travel to her home to break the news of her daughter's death, Alex is stunned to encounter a young girl: Lucy. Later, it is revealed that a grieving Karen kidnapped her after Stephanie's disappearance because of her strong resemblance to her daughter, telling the girl that her real parents had died. Alex gently attempts to bond with the distraught girl, and she soon begins to recognize him as her father. Lucy joyfully reunites with her mother, and when she spots a friendly note from the rest of the team, Alex explains how his friends helped to bring her home. Includes commercials and promos.

(Two out-of-order episodes aired after this one, but this is the narrative series finale.)
