MODERN FAMILY: UP ALL NIGHT (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, Manny is thrilled when his charming father shows up bearing lavish gifts, though Jay is less than pleased, as he dislikes the unreliable Javier. Mitch and Cam attempt to "Ferberize" Lily by allowing her to cry without interference, though Cam finds the process highly distressing. Phil suffers pains at night and is sure that they are fatal, though Claire guesses that he has kidney stones. Jay confronts Javier about repeatedly disappointing Manny by failing to show up, though Javier claims that he "lives in the now" and that Manny benefits from having two dissimilar fathers. Phil bids a tragic farewell to his children as he prepares to head for the hospital, though he is annoyed to see that Claire has dressed up for the arrival of the local firemen, whom everyone considers to be attractive. Mitch repeatedly stops Cam from running to their daughter's aid, and Javier learns about Jay's secret baseball dreams and takes him and Manny to the stadium in the middle of the night.

As Phil is put to sleep for the kidney-stone procedure, he advises Luke on becoming "the man of the house" and questions Claire about the firemen. In the morning, Gloria is exasperated to hear of their late-night antics, particularly when Javier encourages Manny and Jay to blow off school and work to go ride motorcycles. Mitch returns home at Lily's naptime to keep an eye on Cam, and he ends up injuring his ankle as he desperately attempts to prevent Cam from coddling her. Gloria is amused to see that Jay is being "seduced" by Javier's free-spirited ways as she herself once was, and Phil happily declares that Claire's guilt over flirting with the firemen in his hour of need is his "Golden Ticket" that he can save for his future benefit – though this quickly falls apart when Claire learns of his new friendships with his highly attractive hospital neighbors. Mitch explains Cam that he does not want to be the "bad cop" parent, and they resolve their dispute as they decide to call the hot firemen to "save" the injured Mitch. Finally, Alex muses that being told to "act like an adult" is not a tall order, considering the maturity levels of her own parents and relatives. Includes commercials and promos.
