LOST: LA X {PARTS 1 AND 2} {SIXTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The sixth and final season premiere in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters' past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. This two-part episode begins abruptly two-thirds of the way through the first half. Sawyer, Kate, Miles, Jack and Jin dig feverishly through the wreckage at the Swan site, under which Juliet has been dragged by the magnetic pull, while elsewhere Jacob, who notes that he is newly dead, tells Hurley that Sayid, shot by Roger, can only be saved if he is taken to the temple. On Flight 815, Jack and Sayid help to resuscitate Charlie, rendered unconscious by a baggie of heroin in his throat, though Charlie seems annoyed to find himself alive. Sawyer climbs down into the crater and tends to a badly-injured Juliet, who admits that she attempted to detonate the Jughead bomb in order to reset the future, willing to sacrifice her happy life with Sawyer to spare the survivors their terrible experience on the island. Ben stares at Locke's dead body on the beach as Bram and his men enter the statue to find "Locke" inside, calmly explaining that he killed Jacob and that they are now "free." He vanishes as they attack him, and the smoke monster suddenly appears and viciously kills them all, leaving only a stunned Ben behind. "Locke" then reappears and apologizes for letting Ben "see him like that," finally confirming that the man appearing to be Locke is the monster itself.

At the Swan, a dazed Juliet invites Sawyer out for coffee and adds that she has something important to tell him, but she dies in his arms before explaining. Flight 815 lands in Los Angeles without incident and the would-be survivors all disembark, saying brief goodbyes to one another. Jack is then stunned to learn that his father's coffin was never loaded onto the plane and is now missing, while back on the island Sawyer prepares to bury Juliet and asks Miles to stay behind to help. Jack, Kate, Jin and Hurley take Sayid to the temple, where they spot Montand's one-armed skeleton, but they are suddenly captured by the temple-dwellers. At LAX, Kate requests to use the bathroom and manages to break out of her handcuffs, claiming that Mars attacked her as she flees. Sawyer recognizes her in the elevator and helps her to escape, while back on the island Sawyer demands that Miles use his abilities to divine Juliet's last words, and a reluctant Miles reports that she wished to tell him that "it worked." At the temple, Jack and the others are taken to the apparent leaders, Dogen and Lennon, who immediately order the captives shot. Hurley, however, frantically protests that they have been sent by Jacob and produces the mysterious guitar case as proof. The case is revealed to contain a large wooden ankh, which contains a message from Jacob, and Dogen immediately orders Sayid brought to "the spring," saying that they will all be in danger if he dies.

At the airport, Jin is stopped by customs for carrying a large amount of cash, and a conflicted Sun opts not to reveal her knowledge of English to diffuse the situation. The temple people perform a strange ritual in which Sayid is taken into a pool of mysteriously murky water, and the others are shocked when rather than saving him, the others hold him under the water for several minutes. Dogen and Lennon then coldly inform them that their friend is dead, though Jack nonetheless attempts CPR. Kate narrowly avoids the police at LAX by jumping into a cab – which is revealed to already contain Claire – and pulling a gun on the driver. Sawyer and Miles are dragged into the temple as well, having been jumped in the forest, and when Hurley reveals that Jacob is dead, the temple people fly into a panic and quickly begin preparations to "keep him out." In the foot statue, Ben realizes that "Locke" used him to kill Jacob because he could not do so himself, but "Locke" taunts Ben about his murder of the real Locke, saying that John was confused and frightened in his last moments. He notes that while the real Locke loved his time on the island, he himself wants only "to go home." Sayid lies lifeless as Kate tends to an injured Sawyer, who notes that he wishes Jack to suffer after indirectly killing Juliet. At the airport, Jack argues with his mother about Christian's would-be funeral and encounters Locke, who offers philosophical comfort by pointing out that only Christian's body, not his true self, has been lost. Mollified, Jack offers Locke a free medical consultation for his spine, assuring him that "nothing is irreversible."

On the beach, Richard, Lapidus, Sun and the others are horrified to see "Locke" strolling out of the statue, as his dead body lies feet away, and Richard seems to recognize his true identity. "Locke" angrily announces that he is "very disappointed" in all of them before incapacitating Richard and carrying him off. At the temple, Lennon demands a private conversation with Jack, who refuses, but their conflict is interrupted when Sayid suddenly awakens. Includes commercials and promos.
