MODERN FAMILY: THE BICYCLE THIEF (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, the men ponder the true meaning of fatherhood, and Phil is pleased to meet his attractive new neighbor, Desiree. Luke is frustrated to be stuck riding his sister's old bicycle, while elsewhere Mitchell prepares to head to a baby activity class with Lily, nervous that he and Cameron will be the only gay parents in attendance. Jay admits his relief at Manny's plans to spend the weekend with his father Javier at Disneyland, as he and Gloria have planned a trip to wine country, though Gloria reminds the two of them to repair Manny's ceiling fan first. Phil decides to buy Luke a new bike, sure that he is responsible enough to handle it, though he soon finds that Luke has left it unattended and decides to steal it to teach his son a lesson. Jay is annoyed by Manny's constant praise of his irresponsible father, and at the baby class, Mitchell begins to fret that Lily is developmentally behind the other children as Cam tries desperately to tone down his flamboyant mannerisms.

Phil is flustered when Desiree recruits his help in getting into her locked house, and then finds that Luke's bike has been re-stolen by someone else. He quickly buys another one from the unamused salesman, though when he attempts to scold Luke for his lack of attention, he finds that Luke has had the bike all along and that he, Phil, actually stole the wrong one. Jay and Manny argue over the ceiling fan and Manny declares that he hates living with his new stepfather, and though Phil goes out of his way to hide the truth, Claire is less than thrilled to discover that Phil's error was caused by his time spent "in Desiree's bedroom." Mitchell goes to extreme lengths to "prove" Lily's intelligence, and Cam celebrates in a characteristic way when he discovers that they are not, in fact, the only gay parents in the group. When the flaky Javier fails to pick up Manny, Jay covers for him and sacrifices his weekend away with Gloria to take a delighted Manny to Disneyland after all, concluding that a large part of fatherhood is simply "showing up." Includes commercials and promos.
