UNUSUALS, THE: CRIME SLUT (TV)

Summary

One in this darkly comedic series about a group of New York City police detectives and the bizarre cases they pursue. In this episode, Beaumont enjoys a morning with Walsh and heads to a pawn shop where she attempts to sell her jewelry for quick cash, but the store is then robbed by two thieves who also take her watch, borrowed from Walsh. Shraeger and Walsh question the pawnbroker, and Walsh realizes that the male thief was Marvin Bachamel, a dimwitted repeat offender. Delahoy and Banks head to a hospice where an elderly man with a fatal brain tumor, Howard, has gone missing, and the nurse admits that she pronounced him dead shortly before his disappearance. Walsh easily tracks down Marvin, who soon reveals that his accomplice was his beloved fiancée, Rose. Beaumont, desperate to cover her tracks, arrives late for work and recruits Cole to help her find the female robber, though the pawnbroker, working with the sketch artist, recognizes Beaumont from that morning as she flees the precinct.

Davis visits Shraeger and asks her out on an official date, and Brown informs Alvarez that his people skills need work and orders him to create some sort of team-building exercise for the precinct. Delahoy and Banks track Howard's movements to a grocery store, where a witness' video shows the man behaving in a decidedly "undead" manner. Shraeger and Walsh learn that Rose has also robbed a bridal gown store, but with a different male accomplice, and they realize that she has been playing Marvin false and is trying to "steal a wedding." Delahoy dismisses Banks' fears that Howard is a zombie and instead encourages him to ask out Bridget, the pretty dispatch worker. Beaumont asks a confidential informant for help in finding Rose as Cole attempts to ward off Frank yet again, and Walsh attempts to advise Alvarez about being a "team player." Brown observes Delahoy reading Howard's book, "Cat's Cradle," and explains that it is about finding one's true family, giving Delahoy an idea. Walsh and Shraeger track down Rose's second accomplice, only to encounter Cole and Beaumont at the same location, and Rose narrowly escapes after firing at them with a shotgun.

The accomplice, Wiley, explains how Rose wrote to him while he was in prison and enticed him into assisting her with her crimes. Delahoy realizes that Howard is instinctively heading for his childhood home in Brooklyn, and when Shraeger recognizes the pawnbroker's description and confronts Beaumont, she admits that she is deeply in debt and Shraeger also realizes that she is secretly dating Walsh. Rose's mother tells Walsh and Shraeger that Rose is desperate to get married – to anyone – in order to please her father, and Brown assigns the detectives to stake out four different late-night chapels in order to catch her. Delahoy urges Banks to instead spend the evening with Bridget, however, and Shraeger sneaks off to meet Davis, though their date is short-lived. The cops stop the quickie wedding just in time, and Beaumont captures Rose and recovers Walsh's watch. Banks finally manages to ask Bridget out and Casey returns to Davis, and Walsh is non-judgmental when Beaumont confesses the full truth of her money troubles to him. Delahoy finally finds Howard at a playground and admits that he too has a brain tumor and is fearful of his impending death, but the man expires for real before offering any useful "advice" about mortality.
