SUBURGATORY: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this comedy series about a single father and his daughter, both from New York City, trying to make a new life for themselves in the suburbs. After finding a box of condoms in his daughter’s dresser drawer, architect George Altman moves from the city into the suburbs. His daughter, Tessa, is highly displeased with this arrangement, as she views the suburbs as an artificial and banal landscape. George has his own troubles: as a single father he finds himself the romantic target of many suburban mothers, while he is interested in living in the suburbs to give Tessa a better life. Tessa is shown around her school by her assigned “buddy” Dalia; the two of them share a mutual loathing of one another and Dalia inexplicably mistakes Tessa for a lesbian.
George does an architectural consultation for Dallas, Dalia’s mother. She seems interested in George, although her attitudes towards parenting seem quite different from George’s. At school, Tessa tries to make friends with a picked-on girl named Lisa, but Lisa shuns her. On her way home she is picked up by George, Dallas, and Dalia, who take her to the mall. Tessa tries on clothes and despises them, especially when Dallas insults her choice of bra and also indicates she believes Tessa to be a lesbian.
To make a point, Tessa dons a “mall-skank” look at dinner with George and imitates the behavior of the other suburban girls, getting on George’s nerves. They argue and she goes upstairs to bed. George begins to realize that he may not be acting in her best interests. The next morning over breakfast, the two of them attempt to reconcile their differences. Lisa comes to visit and reveals she is the daughter of their neighbors. Upon seeing her embarrassing family, Tessa invites Lisa in and they apologize to one another for their earlier meeting. Dallas visits Tessa and apologizes for her earlier remarks, giving her a bra as a gift. Despite Tessa’s misgivings, she admits that it is “the prettiest thing I owned.” The episode ends as Tessa realizes her father is in “suburgatory” as well, and they will need each other to get along. Commercials deleted.
