MODERN FAMILY: THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY {SECOND SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The second season finale in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, the family excitedly prepares for Jay's birthday, though he explains that he wishes to spend a peaceful day fishing alone. Cam drops a misbehaving Lily off with Gloria and tries to advise Manny on wooing a sports-loving girl, and when Phil heads out shopping, he runs into his "college rival," Glen Whipple, who seems to best him at everything. He runs into Gloria and is pleased to be mistaken for her husband, while elsewhere Mitchell and Claire don child-like attire and break into the backyard of their childhood home, intending to recreate a memorable photograph as a present for Jay. Once there, however, they are scared by a giant dog and forced to hide in a treehouse. Jay's relaxing day is interrupted when he is called to pick up Stella from the dog groomer, and when a nervous Manny calls Cam for further advice, Cam's suggestions are wildly misinterpreted by the other bakery patrons, resulting in his being ousted from the store.
Luke is forced to do some "creative editing" when he, Alex and Haley find that the commemorative video that they were supposed to make for Jay is decidedly incomplete. Still stuck in the tree, Mitch and Claire share Jay's would-be gift – a bottle of wine – as they note that their dad seems to prefer their much-younger stepbrother. Phil is ecstatic when Glen reappears and believes that the glamorous Gloria is his wife, but he is taken aback when Glen admits that he was even more jealous of Phil's romance with Claire back in college. Jay is forced to rescue his squabbling children from the treehouse and to pick up his own cake – which is then destroyed by Stella back at home. Though annoyed by the day's surprises, Jay concludes that he is lucky to have a loving family who have gathered to celebrate him, though his gifts, including the "edited" video, prove unimpressive. Outside, however, Manny reveals that he has dragged Jay's boat into the pool in an attempt to give him a day at the lake, and Jay is touched by the effort. Mitch and Cam decide that they are ready for a second child, and Phil, still startled by his talk with Glen, goes overboard in reminding Claire of his love for her. Includes commercials and promos.
