PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: INSIDE MEDIA: NYC 22: NEW PRIME-TIME DRAMA {LONG VERSION ANAMORPHIC}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's Inside Media events. Held at the Paley Center in New York, this evening celebrates the premiere of "NYC 22," the procedural drama series about a diverse group of rookie cops in Harlem's twenty-second precinct. Host David Bushman (television curator, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and then brings creator and executive producer Richard Price to the stage, and Price introduces the pilot episode, which is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 107576.)

After the screening, moderator Katie McGee (entertainment reporter, CBS 2) introduces the panelists: executive producers Price and Jane Rosenthal; and cast members Tom Reed (Ahmed Khan), Judy Marte (Tonya Sanchez), Adam Goldberg (Ray 'Lazarus' Harper), Terry Kinney (Daniel 'Yoda' Dean), Leelee Sobieski (Jennifer 'White House' Perry), Harold House Moore (Jayson 'Jackpot' Toney), and Felix Solis (Terry Howard).

The conversation touches on such topics as: the "Byzantine" area of Harlem in which the show is set; Price's interest in avoiding a stereotypical depiction of New York City areas; casting the ensemble based on "gut feeling," and his desire to emulate the eccentric citizens of the bar in "Star Wars"; how the cast landed their roles and the real-life friendships between onscreen partners; the uncomfortable experience of watching themselves onscreen; Price's collaboration with Rosenthal and executive producer Ken Sanzel, a former transit cop; consultation with various other former NYPD officers to achieve authenticity; the input of executive producer Robert De Niro and the possibility of his directing an upcoming episode.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: the "hazing" of the rookies by the veteran officers, as seen in the episode; whether Price's former show "The Wire" influences his work on "NYC 22"; the varying experiences filming in different NYC neighborhoods; strict rules about the cast's police uniform costumes and being mistaken for real cops; combining "local talent" with "street kids" for the big gang fight scene; and whether Price is influenced by the work of crime novelist Chester Himes.
