IN PLAIN SIGHT: THE MEDAL OF MARY (TV)
Summary
One in this drama series about United States Marshal Mary Shannon, who works for the Witness Protection Program out of Albuquerque. In this episode, after Mary arrests her long-absent bank robber father, James Wiley Shannon, Marshall and the others inquire after Mary's wellbeing, though she seems unconcerned by the incident. She urges Marshall to go spend time with his own visiting father and Abigail, and he does. Mary encounters FBI Agent O'Connor, whom she strongly dislikes, and he reveals that James intends to give up Cormac "Sully" Sullivan, his former partner and another most-wanted criminal, but will only talk to Mary. She is further angered to learn that Sully knows the whereabouts of her mother and sister, and she hurriedly goes to confront her father as the other agents search for Jinx and Brandi. James explains how he met Sully and fell into a life of crime, admitting that he enjoyed it, though adding that he tried to maintain a no-violence "code" and, upon learning that his family was in danger from the volatile Sully, abandoned them to protect them. Mary remembers the day that her father gave her a medal of the Virgin Mary before departing, but she seems unmoved by his claims of caring about her and the family.
Mary talks to Scott, her half-brother, but he refuses to enter protective custody, saying he does not trust James. James suggests luring Sully out of hiding with the promise of a large heist, and he takes Mary and the others to a safe house, explaining that he has been keeping an eye on Mary and the family over the years. At the safe house, Mary learns that James has secretly befriended Mark and Norah without realizing his identity, and she is furious that Mark would allow him near their child. James procures a large emerald from inside the house with which to tempt Sully, and Mary spots of bottle of pills and makes note of the name. James then meets with Finn, Sully's go-between man, and explains that there is a vault of gems with poor security that they can rob, and he takes the bait. At home, Mary lectures Mark for being careless with Norah, but Marshall advises her to go easy on him. Later, she calls Jinx repeatedly and gets no answer, and learns that James' pills are for cancer. Abigail bonds with Marshall's father Seth and Seth seems to approve of her, though he privately suggests to Marshall that perhaps he is meant to be with someone else.
McQueen informs Mary that Jinx and Brandi are safe, and when Mary confronts her father about the medicine, he confirms that he has stage three cancer. The two talk about their past and slowly begin to mend their relationship, and Mary gives James the religious medal as a talisman of safety. James then goes to the spot where he is to meet Sully, but Sully calls on the phone, having figured out the scheme, and informs James that he has Scott. A gunshot is heard, stunning the agents, and James collapses in shock. When the paramedics are called, he escapes from the ambulance and vanishes, and O'Connor suggests that Mary is helping him, angering her greatly. The manhunt gets underway, and Mary tells Marshall that she is sure that the normally peaceable James is going to kill Sully in revenge for Scott, then revealing that she placed a tracking device in the Mary medal, meaning that she can easily find her father.
