GUYS WITH KIDS {PILOT} (TV)

Summary

The pilot of this comedy series about a trio of men in their thirties raising their infant children. A trio of best friends, Nick, Gary, and Chris, all have young or infant children and live in the same apartment building. Each of them has different living arrangements: Gary lives at home with his four children while his wife Marny works, causing him a great deal of stress. Chris is a lawyer who is divorced from his wife Sheila and tries to raise his infant son Ernie on his own while dealing with Sheila's sometimes unreasonable demands. Nick lives with his wife Emily and his children Violet and Freddy. Chris manages to get a date with a woman he meets in a bar named Megan, who offers to take him to a Knicks game. However, he has to watch Ernie and won't be able to make it. He tries to ask Sheila to watch Ernie, but she claims to have a date herself with basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and is vehemently opposed to the suggestion of getting a babysitter. However, Chris plans to secretly get a babysitter anyway. Chris asks Gary and Nick for recommendations for babysitters, and Nick comes forth with a suggestion. Emily gets a notice from Violet's school that they are having a Titanic-themed fundraising party, neither she nor Nick seem very enthusiastic about it. Nick and Gary take Chris to a clothing store to get him better clothes for his date, but his babysitter cancels on him at the last minute. Nick steps in and agrees to watch Ernie for Chris. Nick is surprised to find Emily dressing up for the fundraiser and says he doesn't wish to go; she becomes frustrated with him and commiserates with Gary and Marny about the difficulty of being a stay-at-home parent. Marny takes her to the fundraiser instead. Gary comes over to Nick's apartment to take out his frustrations on him, but relents when he realizes that Nick has a working television he can use, whereas Gary's is broken. Chris waits in line for the Knicks game with Megan and receives a call from Sheila. She suspects he is not at home with Ernie like he claims and Chris tries to call Nick to make sure Ernie is all right. However, Nick and Gary are busy playing on the Wii and cannot hear Chris's call. Meanwhile, Gary points out to Nick that Emily only wanted to go to the fundraiser because she wanted Nick to go with her so they could have a night out together. Chris becomes concerned when Nick doesn't answer and rushes home, reluctantly leaving his date at the game. He comes home to find Ernie safe, but the presence of Nick, Gary, and their kids has put his apartment in disarray. Sheila arrives and is furious that Chris would leave Ernie in their hands. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar enters as well, and the guys are star-struck. Chris finally stands up for himself and, with a little assistance from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, tries to get Sheila to realize that Ernie is his responsibility and that she should trust his decisions on how to raise him. Sheila realizes Chris is right. Nick decorates his apartment in a Titanic theme and has a dance with Emily to show that he cares, and this appears to work. Gary and Marny attempt to get intimate in their bathroom despite the interruptions of their children. Commercials deleted.
