GCB: REVELATION {SERIES FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The finale of this comedy series about a woman who returns to her childhood home in Dallas only to deal with her enemies, still holding grudges since high school.

Carlene and her entourage are all restrained and led into a shack in the desert surrounded by guards. Nine hours earlier, Carlene invites Cricket to join her in Juarez, Mexico to break ground for her new housing project, “Condos for Christian Living.” Cricket is unwilling to go, but changes her mind when she encounters Mason in her office, using it as an excuse to avoid him and allay her husband’s suspicions. Carlene convinces Pastor Tudor to accompany her to Mexico in order to bless her project, noting that the locals might be persuaded to assist her due to a confluence of the planets according to ancient Aztec traditions. He reluctantly agrees to go but asks Amanda to come with him, unwilling to be around Carlene and her friends without “moral support.” Amanda is heading into Austin to see Luke, but Gigi offers to go with Pastor Tudor in her stead. Zack tries to give Sharon business advice, but she is more interested in her personal satisfaction than in turning a profit with her new basket-making business.

Amanda tries to surprise Luke at his house but finds his neighbor is there instead, claiming that Luke went to Juarez with Carlene; he lied on the phone and told her that he was working from home. She manages to get on Carlene’s flight to Mexico just before it takes off. Once in Juarez, Gigi demands to know what happened with Luke. Amanda tells her that she’s in Juarez to find him and Gigi insists on helping her. They break off from the group, who are busy shopping around town. Amanda is furious at Luke for lying to her, especially when she comes to believe that he is in Mexico having an affair with a local woman. They peer in and see Ripp hugging the woman, Lucia, and are shocked. Luke discovers that Amanda tried to visit him, but reassures Ripp that she can’t possibly know about him and Lucia. Ripp says that he cannot deceive Carlene anymore, and that when he gets home he will reveal everything to her. Amanda believes that Ripp is the one having an affair and wants to tell Carlene at her construction site, but Gigi advises against this.

Zack receives a substantial offer for Sharon’s business, but she is still unwilling to part with it, wanting to emulate Cricket and her business ventures. Cricket wants to call her headquarters to help market a cosmetic cream manufactured in Juarez; Sharon claims that this is her idea and Cricket is attempting to steal it, meaning that she has to make her call first. However, Amanda, Carlene, Heather, Sharon, Gigi, and Cricket all find themselves locked into a limousine heading into the desert, and cannot seem to escape or alter their course. Amanda is convinced that they have been kidnapped. They are restrained and led into a shed, where they attempt to bargain with their captors for their release. They are brought before the woman responsible, introducing herself as Debby Horowitz. She calls herself “a proud descendant of the Aztec nation” and demands that Carlene abandon her construction project and leave their lands alone. She tries to force Carlene to sign over her deed back to the indigenous people in exchange for releasing them, but Carlene refuses. Meanwhile, Zack gets a final substantial offer on Sharon’s company and wants to accept, but feels guilty about doing so without Sharon’s permission. He asks Pastor Tudor for advice and decides to accept the offer.

Carlene is perfectly willing to become a “martyr” and die by Debby’s hands as long as she releases the others. When Debby produces a knife the others reveal that Carlene has not officially filed the deed to the land yet and that it is in her purse. Once she has that Debby and her guards leave them, taking their phones and car away. Carlene admits that this predicament is her fault and promises to save everyone by leading them out into the pitch-black desert night to safety, although the others are afraid for their lives. Zack and Pastor Tudor realize that the women are missing and set out to find them. Carlene and company sleep out in the middle of the desert and awaken the next morning, hungry, thirsty, and tired. The only liquid available to them is a bottle of tequila Sharon purchased earlier. Back in Dallas, Blake takes Cricket’s desk and is confronted by Mason again. He reveals that he has been speaking with Booth and implies that he knows Blake is secretly gay. Pastor Tudor calls Blake to tell him that Cricket and the others are missing. The women continue to make their way through the desert, growing increasingly inebriated from the tequila. Amanda refuses to drink it due to her alcoholism, but eventually gives in and takes a sip. Sharon and Cricket get into a fight, and Cricket also yells at Carlene about her condo project. She genuinely believes in her project and that the idea for it originated with God. Amanda takes the opportunity to tell Carlene about what she saw Ripp doing earlier. Carlene doesn’t believe her until Gigi concurs with her observations. Overcome with grief, Carlene collapses and starts crying, forcing Amanda to carry her through the desert.

Father Tudor and Zack manage to track down Cricket’s phone and one of Carlene’s guards, and they get him to tell them that the women are lost in the desert. The women eventually reach the site of Carlene’s groundbreaking. Amanda tells Carlene not to lose hope, and that she will eventually move on from her husband’s affair just as she has. Gigi decides to use a concealed handgun and a can of hairspray to ignite a billboard at the construction site, hoping that the ensuing fire will alert someone to their location. Pastor Tudor and Zack see the smoke from their fire and rescue them. The local police force arrests Debby based on the women’s’ testimonies. Zack tells Sharon that he sold her company, making her upset. They are surprised to learn that the corporation which bought her company is actually owned by Cricket via one of her subsidiaries. Blake arrives and has an emotional reunion with Cricket. He gets her to confess that she does care about Mason, but tried to avoid him so as not to upset Blake, and he tells her that Mason knows about his homosexuality.

Amanda and Gigi bring Carlene to see Ripp, much to her discomfort. He and Lucia answer the door, and he admits the truth to Carlene: Lucia is actually his daughter, coming as a shock to Carlene, Amanda, and Gigi. Luke confronts Amanda and tells her that he deceived her in order to protect Ripp and Lucia until he could confront Carlene about it, helping to organize the construction work. He apologizes to Amanda and tells her that he loves her. Amanda admits that she still has difficulty trusting men, and is uncomfortable with Luke in spite of his good intentions. She is unsure of how to proceed and leaves Luke for the time being. Later Father Tudor speaks to her at a bar, trying to give her some comfort. She reveals that drinking tequila in the desert was frightening to her and she decided to “test” herself by ordering vodka, but she didn’t drink it, indicating that she can potentially regain her sobriety. She gets him to open up about his life: he had an “imperfect” childhood before joining the military and serving in the Middle East in a search and rescue unit; he completed his tours and joined the clergy as a means to keep “saving” people. Suddenly they kiss, surprising even themselves. Includes commercials.
