BOARDWALK EMPIRE: GEORGIA PEACHES (TV)

Summary

One in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition. In this episode, Owen supervises as Nucky's shipment of liquor arrives directly from Ireland, and he quickly makes a large sale to a local bar owner. Van Alden struggles to get used to his new Norwegian nanny, Sigrid, and receives divorce papers in the mail from Rose. Margaret, Nucky and Teddy visit Emily in the hospital and learn that there may be extensive damage to her legs from the polio, though the test results have not yet returned. Al, Jimmy, Lansky and Luciano visit Mickey at the distillery, and Jimmy angrily tells Mickey to pay Manny Horvitz. Luciano and Lansky show Jimmy their heroin, suggesting that it will sell well to "artist types" in New York. Nucky fires his lawyer, Ginsburg, when he admits that he cannot keep Nucky's trial in Atlantic County, where he has influence. The ward bosses confront Jimmy about the ongoing strike by the city's black workers, refusing to accept his suggestion of a wage increase. Eli suggests simply letting "fifty guys with billy clubs" handle it, then learning that his deputy Halloran has talked to Esther Randolph. Whitlock points out that Nucky had little trouble in keeping the black community happy, and the Commodore offers his own strongly worded feelings about Jimmy's ineptitude.

Margaret is furious when Teddy jokes that he too has polio, and Nucky offers to take the boy along to New York when he travels there to hire a new lawyer. Eli's plan goes into action and the strikers are soundly beaten by a mob, though Halloran is also attacked. In New York, Nucky meets with Bill Fallon on Rothstein's suggestion, and Fallon gives a wary Teddy a baseball apparently signed by Ty Cobb. He tells Nucky that he cannot move the trial to Atlantic City, but assures him that he is good at "making friends" with judges, and Rothstein advises Nucky to take the gamble. Eli visits a badly injured Halloran, who complains that he was beaten by "normal white men" rather than black strikers, but Eli hints that he deserved it for talking to Randolph. Margaret tells Father Brennan about Emily's condition, and he suggests that she must make an "offer" to God if she is requesting something in return. Jimmy and Richard meet with Chalky and offer to make his murder charge disappear if he brings the strike to an end, and Chalky demands money for the families of his murdered men and adds that the killers must be brought to him personally. Jimmy objects to the last point, however, and Chalky refuses him.

Nucky tells Teddy that he understands his jealousy, as he too once had a sickly little sister, but Teddy then questions Nucky about his legal troubles and reveals that he witnessed Nucky burning down his childhood home. Al, Luciano and Lansky complain that they cannot sell their booze because of Nucky and blame Jimmy for not handling the situation, and Jimmy finally suggests that they should split up and sell in different towns. Randolph questions Van Alden about his evidence against Nucky, and Van Alden swears that Nucky ordered Hans' murder, though he cannot prove it. Mickey visits Manny and attempts to pay off Jimmy's debt with booze, but Manny remains convinced that Jimmy attempted to have him killed and demands his whereabouts. Randolph visits Eli in jail and states that Halloran has given evidence about Eli's murder of Hans, suggesting that he should save himself by turning on Nucky. Margaret visits Brennan again and tries to show her "devotion" by donating her jewelry and the money taken from Nucky, stating that she is "looking for a miracle" for Emily. Jimmy and Angela share a rare romantic moment as he prepares to leave town, telling her that he will soon be "the person she wants him to be." The doctor tells Margaret and Nucky that Emily's paralysis is likely permanent, while at home Teddy stashes the baseball under his bed and examines a photo of his family, including Hans. Having learned the address from Mickey, Manny sneaks into the Darmody home late at night, but accidentally murders Angela's lover Louise instead of Jimmy. Angela tearfully swears that Jimmy is not there and begs for mercy, but Manny sadly tells her that "her husband did this to her" and kills her as well as Jimmy, unaware of the carnage, drives towards Princeton.
