NASHVILLE: DEAR BROTHER (TV)
Summary
One in this drama series about aging country music star Rayna Jaymes struggling with both her fading career and issues in her personal life.
Juliette plans to throw a surprise party for Deacon's birthday, despite his distaste for such events and his usual birthday tradition: sitting at home alone watching "Old Yeller." Rayna is concerned about Teddy's relationship Peggy, especially after Maddie overheard him on the phone with her. Juliette hires Dante, a drug rehabilitation counselor, to help her mother, but seems to distance herself from the recovery process. Rayna tells Tandy about her upcoming divorce and goes out grocery shopping with her. There, she discovers that a tabloid magazine has already reported on Rayna's divorce and is spreading rumors about her relationships with Deacon and Liam. Rayna and Tandy try to explain to Maddie that their information is out of context. Scarlett and Gunnar discover Jason's gun and Gunnar goes to confront him about it, emptying the gun of ammunition. Rayna realizes she is going to have to speak to Deacon in person about the divorce and the tabloid story.
Gunnar meets with Jason, furious that he did not get rid of the gun when he promised to. Jason insists that he needs it for protection and asks for it back. Gunnar throws the gun into a river and angrily leaves, saying he can no longer look out for Jason. Juliette meets with Scarlett and asks her to make sure Deacon is at the Blue Bird for his surprise party, promising that she and Gunnar will be able to open up the evening with a performance. Rayna speaks with divorce lawyers and refuses to answer them when they question her about her sex life. They advise her not to attend Deacon's surprise party for fear of further incriminating her in the eyes of the press. Dante tells Juliette that she should be more involved with her mother's rehabilitation, but Juliette insists that she merely provides funding for it, nothing more. Juliette learns about the tabloid story concerning Rayna's divorce.
Rayna soon finds that she is mobbed with paparazzi wherever she goes. Avery meets Watty in a guitar store and asks for advice about his career, but Watty offers him little. Rayna decides to shut herself in her house for a while to evade the press. In the middle of his annual "Old Yeller" viewing, Deacon is visited by Scarlett, who convinces him to come to the Blue Bird that night to see her and Gunnar sing. Teddy gives a press conference asking the media to leave Rayna alone about the divorce. He also announces that Peggy has been appointed as his financial aid, much to Rayna's disgust. Lamar visits Rayna and offers his apologies; he thought that installing Teddy as mayor would help strengthen the family, but sees that the opposite has occurred. He urges her not to hide from the press, and that she has nothing to be ashamed about.
Scarlett and Gunnar wait outside the Blue Bird to go on for Deacon's party. Gunnar mentions that Jason called him, but he never answered. Deacon arrives and is led in, where the surprise party is under way. Despite his reluctance to celebrate his birthday, Deacon is persuaded to stay, and he greets a number of high-profile country music singers in attendance. Scarlett and Gunnar take the stage and everyone is impressed at their musical talent. Avery tries to get into the Blue Bird but isn’t allowed inside. He looks in and sees Scarlett and Gunnar onstage together. Rayna, still at home, calls Watty, asking him to listen to a new piece of music she's written. Lamar meets with Teddy in his office, trying to cajole him into appointing his selections for positions in the mayor's office. Teddy insists that he wants to uphold the integrity of the office, but Lamar reminds Teddy of his unfaithfulness to Rayna, insinuating that he has no such integrity.
Rayna and Watty arrive at the Blue Bird. A mob of paparazzi surround Rayna, but this time she walks past them, unafraid. She enters the Blue Bird and is greeted by Deacon. A pair of detectives arrives and asks Gunnar to come with them. Juliette calls Deacon onstage and he makes a short speech thanking everyone for coming to his party. Jolene drinks too much wine and suffers a relapse, forcing Juliette to take her home. Peggy visits Teddy at his office to continue their tryst. At Deacon's party, Rayna goes onstage to sing a song she wrote especially for him. Juliette puts her mother to bed, and Jolene apologizes for ruining the party, hinting that she did something similar on Juliette's ninth birthday. Gunnar is taken to a police morgue where he identifies Jason's dead body; he weeps over his brother's body.
Dante arrives at Juliette's house and she agrees to sit down and talk with him. She reveals that Jolene had planned a party for Juliette's ninth birthday at an ice cream parlor, but cancelled it a few days before after she spent the money on drugs instead. Later that night, Juliette prevented her mother from inadvertently burning down the house. She confesses that in that moment, she wanted her mother to die. Dante believes he can help them both. Rayna sits down with Deacon after the party and they talk about Rayna's divorce. She admits that she is unsure of what direction her life is taking. The next day, Deacon returns home to find that Juliette has given him one more birthday present: a yellow Labrador puppy. Teddy meets with Coleman and offers him the job of deputy mayor, unwilling to bow to Lamar's demands. Coleman, surprised, accepts Teddy's offer. Gunnar returns home to a worried Scarlett and reveals that Jason was beaten to death in an alleyway. He feels responsible for Jason's death, but Scarlett tells him it isn't his fault. The episode ends as the two of them have sex. Commercials deleted.
