MINDY PROJECT, THE: MINDY'S BIRTHDAY (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about the life and loves of Dr. Mindy Lahiri, OB-GYN. In this episode, Jeremy struggles to tell an overweight pregnant patient that she must lose weight and ropes Mindy into doing it for him, with awkward results. Later, Mindy chats on the phone with her brother Rishi about spending her birthday on a blind date with a promising-sounding guy, but she arrives at the restaurants to find her friends waiting with a surprise party, with Morgan having invented the date guy. Jeremy and Danny immediately both take an interest in Alex, but Mindy is taken aback by the random guest list, and she objects when her gifts all pertain to her single status and desire to lose weight, unhappy to be "reminded how lame she is." She leaves and heads for a chain restaurant, where she receives a free sundae and hangs out with some sorority girls who take pity on her for spending her birthday alone. Elsewhere, her friends search for her, though Danny and Jeremy take the opportunity to flirt with Alex as much as possible. Mindy's new friends turn on her when she calls out one of their boyfriends as being a "total sketchball," and she is shocked to realize that former nurse Beverley is working as a waitress at the restaurant.

Mindy tells Beverley about her disastrous night, and the two unexpectedly bond over cheap drinks, and Mindy ends up rehiring her as an executive secretary. As her friends continue searching, Danny decides that he cannot compete with Jeremy, but Morgan bolsters his confidence with some very strange advice. Danny again attempts to woo Alex, but falls down a manhole while distracted. He is further embarrassed by his dramatic rescue, and Mindy rushes to his side at the hospital, believing him gravely injured thanks to Morgan's misleading text message, though he admits that he only broke his ankle. Mindy makes up with her friends, but they are all surprised when arrogant midwife Brendan shows up to make amends with her. He explains that his experience as a child actor led him to overcompensate confidence-wise, and Mindy is touched to learn that he has had stars named for the constellation she invented. Danny spots the two in a romantic moment, but is cheered when Alex tells him that she is interested in him, not Jeremy. Mindy ends up celebrating her birthday with her friends in the hospital waiting room, complete with booze and cake. Commercials deleted.
