DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: WITCH'S LAMENT (TV)

Summary

One in this darkly comedic soap opera about the denizens of Wisteria Lane, a suburban neighborhood with a seedy underbelly that is thrust to the forefront after the suicide of one titular housewife. In this episode, on Halloween night, Bree, Lynette and Gabrielle make a shocking discovery when they arrive at Alejandro's makeshift grave. Three days earlier, Susan is surprised when Andre selects her as his intern, and Gabrielle urges Carlos to consider an Alcoholic Anonymous meeting after his recent drunken escapes. When Jane offers to assist with Penny's Halloween costume, Lynette declares that she will handle it, as it is a "mother-daughter tradition" between the two of them. Gabrielle and Bree wonder how best to kill Ben's construction project, which will undoubtedly unearth Alejandro's body, and Renee forces Ben to "beg" when he tries to sweet-talk her into their first official date. Susan is dismayed to find that her "intern" duties are really just babysitting Andre's son Jasper – for free – and when Lynette admits that she has no costume-making talents after all, Renee offers to enlist a Broadway friend to help her show up Jane.

Carlos heads to an AA meeting and meets Allen, who questions him about what might have happened two months ago to trigger his drinking, prompting Carlos to make a hasty exit. Bree tries to convince Ben to relocate his construction site, blaming some local "anti-Australian miscreants," but Ben assures her that the only hurdle left is the environmental impact study report. Inspired by this, Bree drags Gabrielle along to capture some "endangered" frogs to place in the construction spot, and Gabby confesses to her friend about her husband's drinking. Susan discovers that Jasper, used to being neglected by his father, hates Halloween, and she resorts to extreme measures to convince Andre to accompany her out trick-or-treating with M.J. Bree and Gabby's plan fails when the frogs make a brave escape, and Bree realizes that they have only one option left. Jasper and M.J. enjoy their evening of candy collecting, but Susan is taken aback to realize just how little interest Andre has in bonding with his son and returns his "kidnapped" painting, coldly stating that she will care for the boys herself.

Tom, Jane and Lynette are all horrified to discover that Penny's costume is far too "mature" for her, but Jane helps Lynette to cover her fib by hastily constructing a skirt. Renee nervously prepares for her date with Ben and consumes some Chinatown "sex drugs," though they are repeatedly interrupted by trick-or-treaters. A somewhat humbled Andre tells Susan that he will attempt to be a better father, but warns her that the life of a true artist will "consume her" at the cost of everything else. Renee has an allergic reaction to the drugs and is rushed to the doctor by Ben, and though Jane and Lynette begin to bond over the Halloween costume, Jane is surprised when Lynette begs her to "back off" and stop pursuing Tom, and she firmly tells her that she must accept the conclusion of her marriage. Lynette, Gabby and Bree sneak out to move Alejandro's body, deciding that Susan and Carlos must be left unaware, and at the hospital, and embarrassed Renee confesses that she was trying to make her night with Ben "special," as she has realized that she has genuine feelings for him. Carlos turns to alcohol again as he finds that he cannot escape thoughts of Alejandro's death, and when the three women sneak through the dark woods, they are shocked to find that his body is already gone.
