MOM: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The pilot of this comedy series about an ex-alcoholic single mother dealing with the troubled relationship between herself, her children, and her own mother. Christy, a waitress working in an upscale restaurant, has a number of problems in her life. She has quit a lifetime of alcohol and drug abuse to provide a better life for her children, who are growing increasingly distant from and resentful towards her. She feels as though her dream of becoming a psychologist is out of her reach, since she never finished high school. In addition, she is carrying on an affair with her married boss Gabriel, and is frustrated by her daughter Violet, who is beginning to drink and use drugs, and has become sexually active with her boyfriend Luke. Her frustrations are compounded when she takes a day off of work in order to attend her son Roscoe’s talent show, only to find she has come on the wrong day. Afterwards she attends one of her Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, relating the story of her childhood growing up with her drug-abusing, often-absent mother. Christy feels that becoming sober has helped her to realize that her life is a failure. Her mother, Bonnie, is also attending the meeting, leading to their first conversation in several years. Bonnie and Christy go out to lunch together, and Bonnie reflects on how her two years of sobriety has changed her life for the better, giving her a steady job and peace of mind. Christy claims she has her life under control but Bonnie knows otherwise from keeping regular contact with Violet. Bonnie is concerned about Violet’s lifestyle, but Christy has still not forgiven Bonnie for her failure as a parent, and she bitterly storms out. Christy tries to complaint to Gabriel, but he leaves with his wife Claudia. She returns home to find her deadbeat ex-husband Baxter playing video games with Roscoe. He is behind on his child support payments, and offers to help with that if she gives him money to help him sell off marijuana. She refuses, and also must contend with Luke’s reappearance and Gabriel’s arrival. Finally she speaks to Violet and begs her forgiveness, but Violet points out that Christy has yet to forgive Bonnie. As a show of good faith, Christy calls Bonnie to do precisely that, but Violet is still not completely convinced. That night Bonnie arrives to help take care of the kids, and sits down to tea with Christy. She explains how she’s come upon a “new chapter” in her life, and wants to be the best parent she can be to Christy and her children. Just before leaving on her date, Bonnie quickly informs Christy that Violet may be pregnant, much to Christy’s shock. Commercials deleted.
