OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES, THE XIX {2002 SALT LAKE CITY OLYMPICS}: DAY 1 {PART 3 OF 3} (TV)

Summary

This program presents a portion of coverage of the 2002 XIX Olympic Winter Games from Salt Lake City. Highlights of this portion include coverage of the following events and topics: Anchor sports commentators Bob Costas and Katie Couric preside throughout this portion and introduce various events and highlights. Mitt Romney, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, greets the Olympic spectators and athletes and recognizes the hardships that athletes endure to make it to the Olympic Games. Dr. Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, makes a speech urging athletes to avoid using drugs. United States President George W. Bush gives a speech officially endorsing the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Sports commentators Jim Lampley and Hannah Storm highlight parts of the Opening Ceremony of the 2002 Olympic Games, including famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Sting performing the song "Fragile." Skeleton racer Jim Shea Jr. (USA) recites the Athlete's Oath. Allen Church, an American alpine skiing sports official, takes the Judge's Oath at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. United States figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, gold medalist in the 1992 Winter Olympic Games, is also featured. Costas and Couric provide coverage on the carrying of the torch during the Opening Ceremony, featuring former United States figure skating gold medalists Dorothy Hamill, Dick Button, Peggy Fleming, and Scott Hamilton. The torch is passed to former United States alpine skiing gold medalists Phil Mahre, Bill Johnson, and Picabo Street (USA). The torch is then passed on to former United States speed skating gold medalists Dan Jansen and Bonnie Blair. Cammi Granato, former gold medalist for the United States women's hockey team, takes the torch next. Finally the torch is lit by Mike Eruzione, a member of the "Miracle on Ice" United States hockey team that defeated the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. LeAnn Rimes sings "Light The Fire Within" during the Opening Ceremony. Lampley interviews former hockey players Eruzione and Jim Craig on their thoughts and feelings during the Opening Ceremony for the 2002 Olympic Games. Sports commentator Beth Ruyak interviews Fleming and Hamilton on their personal feelings during the Opening Ceremony. Sports commentator Lewis Johnson interviews former figure skaters Hamill and Button, discussing their own feelings. Sports commentator Jim Maceda covers a segment on the military in Afghanistan and their thoughts on the start of the Olympic Games. Costas and Couric interview talk show host Jay Leno on his personal feelings concerning the Opening Ceremony.
