NASHVILLE: I'LL NEVER GET OUT OF THIS WORLD ALIVE {FIRST SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The first season finale in this drama series about aging country music star Rayna James struggling with both her fading career and issues in her personal life. In this episode, a shell-shocked Juliette tries to answer questions about her mother's death in an apparent murder-suicide, while elsewhere Rayna tells her daughters that she will be attending the CMA Awards with "Uncle" Deacon, whom she is now seeing. Gunnar admits to Jack that he stole his late brother's lyrics and bad-boy persona, but Jack advises him to maintain the fiction despite Scarlett's objections, sure that it will help his public image. Will spots Avery meeting with Scarlett, who states that she needs a break from performing, and he invites her along to his next gig. Deacon visits Juliette, who coldly rejects his offer of comfort and declares that she is still attending the awards show, and Teddy is alarmed when Dashell Brinks calls him with questions about the Cumberland loan. Deacon is stunned when Maddie tells him that he may be her biological father, and Scarlett seems unimpressed by Gunnar's apology. Juliette's team tries to advise her against attending to awards, suggesting that she needs time to mourn, though Juliette rages that she is glad that her struggle with her mother is "finally over." Gunnar is confused when he walks in on Will romancing a young lady, and Will mentions that he spotted Scarlett with her ex.

A flustered Deacon arrives just in time to perform "Bitter Memory" with Rayna and Brad Paisley, and afterwards, when he demands answers from her, she acknowledges that he is indeed Maddie's father and that she and Teddy made the decision to raise her as their own, as Deacon was in the midst of his addiction at the time. Gunnar finds Scarlett performing onstage with Avery at the Bluebird, and Juliette departs the CMA Awards after all to visit her mother's coffin, in despair that she is now "all alone." Teddy and Rayna desperately try to reason with a distraught Maddie, assuring her that she is truly theirs, while elsewhere Deacon, stunned at Rayna's deception, falls off the wagon and begins drinking again. Teddy admits to his lawyer that Peggy helped him to embezzle $2,000,000 from the credit union, guessing that Lamar bribed an auditor to unearth his secret, and Walter guesses that Peggy will be used as a "smoking gun" against him. Rayna, worried about Deacon, begs Coleman to find him, where elsewhere Juliette learns that she won Best Female Vocalist at the CMAs, as she had hoped. An inebriated Deacon finds and attacks Teddy, furious at him for "stealing" his daughter, and Juliette confesses her lifelong feelings of inadequacy to Rayna as they prepare to attend Jolene's funeral. Gunnar finds Deacon at home and hurriedly calls Coleman, and when Avery appears at the gravesite, Juliette asks him for a favor.

Coleman, Juliette and Gunnar manage to subdue an incoherent Deacon, while elsewhere Tandy is upset to learn that her father has promoted Albert over her, prompting her to quit. Juliette receives a letter from Jolene and is devastated to learn that her mother was attempting to protect he by destroying the sex tape, murdering Dante and taking her own life, and Deacon awakens from his bender and tells Coleman that he wishes to attend an AA meeting – but when Juliette, unaware of his setback, invites him to a memorial at the Bluebird, he continues his covert drinking. Teddy secretly meets with Peggy, who explains that she was approached by the U.S. attorney's office but told them nothing, as she has discovered that she is pregnant. Brinks confronts Tandy with questions about Lamar, and Juliette performs onstage at the Bluebird with Avery, bidding farewell to her mother in song. As Will nervously turns down a would-be suitor, Scarlett is shocked when Gunnar suddenly proposes. Rayna finds that Deacon is still drunk and refuses to let him drive himself, but their ensuing argument causes them to get into a serious car accident. Includes commercials and promos.
