ACCORDING TO JIM: IN CASE OF JIMERGENCY (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about Jim, a construction business owner in Chicago, and his ongoing battles with his wife, three kids and in-laws.
Jim becomes upset after learning that Cheryl took their son to the doctor over a trivial matter, resulting in an inordinately expensive medical bill. He becomes further outraged when he learns that their insurance company rejected the claim, and says that he will handle the family’s healthcare finances henceforward. Jim goes to the insurance company personally in order to lodge a complaint. However, the insurance representatives mock him over his claim and provide him with no assistance. He threatens to cancel his health insurance policy and makes good on this threat, although the insurance representative is nonplussed by this. He decides not to tell Cheryl about this decision, although he has second thoughts after preventing his children from putting themselves at risk of injury through various means.
He returns to the insurance company to try to sweet-talk to representative and asks to have his policy reinstated. She states that she cannot, but can open a new policy at an increased rate and after a short waiting period. Jim and Andy remove the children’s toys and any other objects they consider dangerous during the waiting period. However, they soon discover that Cheryl has come down with the flu, sending them into a panic. Jim fears that taking Cheryl to a doctor will lead her to discover that he cancelled their insurance. Jim attempts to stall Cheryl, but she insists upon seeing a doctor. Jim says he will call, but instead he threatens Dana into getting her husband to write a prescription for him. She tricks him and manages to escape, but Jim learns from Andy that he can get the same medicine for Cheryl from the pet store, as it is also used to treat fin rot in aquarium fish.
Jim procures the medicine from the pet store and with it Cheryl’s condition rapidly improves, with her none the wiser. However, Jim becomes sick as a result of his altercation with Dana. He takes the same medicine but suffers from intense swelling and bloating, apparently as an allergic reaction to the medication. Cheryl insists on getting him to the emergency room, but he refuses and insists that he is fine. She discovers that the medicine is meant for fish and that Jim cancelled their health insurance, making her furious. She reassumes control over the family’s healthcare and forces him to go to the emergency room, but he asks to stop off and speak to the insurance company first. The representative is so amused at Jim’s predicament that she decides to forego the waiting period and cover the cost of Jim’s hospital bills. Includes commercials.
