HERE'S LUCY: LUCY MAKES A FEW EXTRA DOLLARS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series starring Lucille Ball as Lucy Carter, a single mother working for her brother-in-law Harry at his employment agency.
Lucy has a portrait of Harry painted and hangs in the office, hoping to curry his favor before asking for a raise. This plan does not work, as Harry comes in discussing how they must tighten their budget considerably. He even presents Lucy with flashcards containing rhyming slogans about conserving resources, such as turning off desk lights when not in use. Kim comes to visit Lucy while Harry is out eating breakfast and they devise a plan to “shame” Harry into giving her the raise she wants. Lucy invites Harry out to lunch and Kim appears, claiming she is working as a waitress there to help out her mother. Together they make it seem as though Lucy is in dire financial straits in an attempt to convince Harry to pay her more. They fail to persuade him, and Kim dumps a plate full of salad and a glass full of iced tea onto him, pretending that it was an accident. He remains unconvinced and leaves to eat elsewhere.
Later, Kim and Harry go to the carnival together, and Kim mentions that Lucy has taken a second job to help make ends meet. They find Lucy at the carnival working as the “victim” of a dunk-tank stall. Harry pays to get numerous opportunities to dunk Lucy, much to her disapproval. Lucy and Kim enact another scheme to change Harry’s mind, this time withdrawing a stack of one-dollar bills from the bank and hanging them on a clothesline set up in the office. Lucy calls Harry that night and has him rush down there to deal with an “emergency;” she explains to Kim that they are to pretend that they are running a counterfeiting operation out of the office. However, Harry is fooled into believing that the genuine bills are actually expert-made counterfeits indistinguishable from real currency. Finally Lucy and Kim manage to convince Harry to give Lucy a raise, having him sign a written contract to that effect. However, in a panicked attempt to dispose of the “evidence” of the counterfeiting operation, Harry burns the bills in a trash bin, sending Lucy and Kim into a panic. Harry is soon drenched with water and with a fire extinguisher in an ill-fated attempt to douse the blaze. He prepares to destroy the contract but is interrupted by the arrival of a squad of firefighters. Commercials deleted.
