DANCING WITH THE STARS {SEASON SEVENTEEN, WEEK TWO: LATIN NIGHT} (TV)
Summary
One in this live dance competition series in which celebrities partner with professional ballroom dancers and face off against each other. In this episode, the second week of competition, the dancers focus on Latin-themed styles. Hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke Charvet recap the first week's results, explaining that Amber Riley and Derek Hough are in first place with 27 points and Bill Nye and Tyne Stecklein are at the bottom with 14. The first pair, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren and Valentin Chmerkovskiy, rehearse the samba, trying to find the "joy" in the style, and perform their dance to "Straight to Memphis" by Club Des Belugas. Judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli praise their performance and award them scores of 8, 9 and 8 respectively. Riley and Hough comment on the pressure of performing well after receiving high scores in the first week, and Christina Milian and Mark Ballas rehearse their "fierce" paso doble and perform to Lady Gaga's "Applause," receiving scores of 9/8/8. Bill Engvall and Emma Slater rehearse the jive, which will also be performed by several other contestants and Bergeron is amused when Slater openly declares her intentions to "nick" Hough's techniques. They perform their number to Elton John's "Crocodile Rock" and receive three scores of 7.
Next, Charvet talks with Jack Osbourne about his particularly harsh criticism of himself and his lack of skills, and he and Cheryl Burke rehearse their "sensual" rumba, observed by Osbourne's mother, Sharon. They perform their dance to Gary Jules' "Mad World," and Inaba praises Osbourne's "nobility" as the pair receives three scores of 8. Keyshawn Johnson comments on the challenges of juggling his dance rehearsals with his sportscasting duties at ESPN, and he and Sharna Burgess perform a rumba to James Brown's "Get Up Offa That Thing." Tonioli cautions Johnson about counting his steps more closely, and the pair receives three 6s. Valerie Harper expresses her gratitude for the fans' positive response to her first-week performance, and Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Sasha Farber rehearse their rumba, with Polizzi sternly reminding Farber to keep his romantic movements professional. They perform their dance to Pink and Nate Russ' "Just Give Me a Reason," and Inaba comments that she "didn't feel the story" of the dance between them as they receive scores of 6/7/7.
Leah Remini and Tony Dovolani rehearse their samba, though Remini admits to feeling distracted because of her recent high-profile departure from the controversial Church of Scientology. They perform their dance to "Maria" by Ricky Martin and receive three 8s from the judges. Next, Nye comments on his amusement at the strong positive fan response to his first-week performance, which was far less well-received by the judges, and he and Stecklein perform a paso doble to Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5 in C Minor," observed by several MENSA members in the audience. The judges praise their hard work, though their scores remain low at 6/5/6. Bergeron announces that Julianne Hough, sister to Derek and the fourth-season professional winner, will be appearing as a guest judge in an upcoming episode, and Corbin Bleu and Karina Smirnoff rehearse their jive, with Bleu throwing in some of his trademark "High School Musical" moves. They perform their dance to One Direction's "Kiss You" and receive scores of 9/8/9, cheered on by some of Bleu's "Musical" co-stars.
Harper and Tristan MacManus rehearse their paso doble, with MacManus praising Harper's determination to do well despite battling an aggressive form of cancer and an injured knee. They perform to Santa Esmeralda's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and receive scores of 6/6/7. Next, Brant Daugherty and Peta Murgatroyd perform a "sexy" rumba to Shakira's "Underneath Your Clothes" and receive scores of 8/7/8, with the judges praising their personal chemistry. The final pair, Riley and Hough, rehearse their jive, with Riley explaining that she is determined to prove that plus-sized women can be talented dancers. They perform to Jackie Wilson' "Reet Petite," and though the judges critique their footwork as somewhat "flat," they receive three scores of 8. Bergeron and Charvet then tally up the judges' scores from the first two nights combined with the viewers' votes, and they announce the "safe" couples one by one. Finally, Johnson and Burgess are eliminated from the competition, and Johnson states that he enjoyed the experience despite the disappointing results. Bergeron closes the show by reminding the viewers to vote via telephone for their favorite performance of the night. Includes commercials and promos.
