Summary
The tenth season premiere in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In the first half of this two-part episode, as the storm rages through Seattle, the doctors, including a freshly post-partum Meredith, gather to discuss closing the ER to additional patients – and Callie bluntly reveals Arizona's infidelity with Lauren. Alex and Jo's would-be hookup is waylaid by the arrival of yet more patients, including a number of first responders injured in a mudslide, and EMT Sasha desperately waits for news of her fiancé Brian as Cristina tells a convalescing Meredith that she and Owen have truly split up this time. Ross searches for the mysteriously absent Richard, and when Brooks finds him unconscious in the basement, she too is electrocuted in the pooling water. Owen is impressed to see that someone has written several patients' vitals and allergies on their bodies in Sharpie marker, and Callie refuses to work alongside Arizona as Derek cares for a woman, Lydia, who is desperate to learn about the condition of her house.
Ross finally finds Richard and Brooks and Bailey frantically works to save her boss, leaving Callie to operate with Arizona after all. Alex updates Meredith, who offers to help by calling in more supplies via phone, and Bailey is profoundly relieved when "star" Cristina temporarily saves Richard by restoring a steady heartbeat. Edwards loses patience with Lydia's repeated pleas about her house, and when Bailey and Cristina disagree about Richard's next steps, Cristina reminds her that she technically owns the hospital. Derek and Ross work to save Brooks as Sasha happily greets an unharmed Brian, and April unhappily tells Owen that she accepted Matthew's marriage proposal as Owen tries – and ultimately fails – to save one of the firefighters, Lenny.
Cristina and Bailey discover that Richard named Meredith his medical power of attorney after Adele's death, meaning that she must decide his course of treatment. Murphy unkindly suggests that both Ross and Edwards will be pleased if Brooks is "out of the competition" for good, and Meredith concludes that she is "delusional" thanks to hormones and will decide about Richard solely based on his test results. Alex rallies the other firefighters to donate blood, and an abashed Edwards realizes that Lydia was in fact "Sharpie Lady" and helped to save several people. Meredith ends up siding with Bailey over Cristina regarding Richard, and Brooks' condition worsens as Arizona seeks Alex's advice about mending her "slutty" mistake with Callie. Avery determines that Sasha has necrotizing fasciitis and needs immediate surgery, and the remaining firefighters support Lenny's heartbroken widow when she arrives to see him. Cristina assures Meredith that she made the right call for Richard, and Derek orders a distraught Ross to master himself and help to save his friend. Continues on ACCNUM 113802.
