Summary
One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media’s 31st William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television’s creative community. This PALEYFEST 2014 seminar honors “Vampire Diaries,” a drama series about a comely high school student and her love/hate relationship with a pair of handsome, bloodsucking brothers.
Kristin Dos Santos (reporter, E! Entertainment) moderates the following panelists: executive producers Caroline Dries and Julie Plec; and cast members Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore/Silas), Nina Dobrev (Elena Gilbert/Katherine Pierce), and Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore).
The panelists touch on such topics as: why a romantic scene in the rain between Somerhalder and Dobrev proved to be a nightmare for the actors; ways in which the "rock star status" of the show's two male leads affects the production schedule; the nature of the tumultuous love triangle portrayed on the show; how Dobrev and Somerhalder made Wesley’s experience of directing an episode so memorable; the other cast members’ desire to direct; the death of the show’s “central” character and the ambiguous circumstances surrounding it; the challenge of playing multiple roles via the show’s “doppelganger” conceit; and the many deaths of major characters and how they are often "undone."
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: the show's vocal fan base and their effect on plot developments; the lack of a definite “endgame” for the series; the various permutations of Dobrev’s many characters; if the characters' negative traits set a bad example for the show's impressionable viewers; potential future developments for the lead characters; and why the show’s popularity has recently exploded in Brazil.
