NASHVILLE: I'M SORRY FOR YOU, MY FRIEND (TV)
Summary
One in this drama series about aging country music star Rayna James struggling with both her fading career and issues in her personal life. In this episode, Rayna and Juliette attend a press conference about their hastily assembled tour, though Juliette dodges questions about her split with Sean. Elsewhere, Deacon continues sparring with Cy as Teddy calls Rayna, upset to learn that she will likely not be in town for election night. Gunnar is uncomfortable when Scarlett asks to tag along on his trip to Austin, and Juliette is upset to learn that Sean is refusing to sign the divorce papers, concerned that the press will learn that they actually did marry. Yet another guitar player quits the tour thanks to Rayna's impossible standards, and with the race neck-and-neck, Teddy firmly refuses Lamar's offer to buy votes and seal the deal in his favor. Avery shares some "pillow talk" with Marilyn about Domino's contract, and Marilyn assures him that she is holding out for a better deal, feeling that Domino is taking advantage of his naiveté. Scarlett reunites with Deacon in Austin and Gunnar makes a hasty exit, citing "family obligations," and Rayna convinces a skeptical Liam to join in on lead guitar for three shows only.
Juliette "reaches out" to Sean through a reporter, publicly stating that he is "a wonderful man" and hoping that her words will prompt him to sign the papers. Gunnar finally finds his brother Jason – who is emerging from prison after an eight-year sentence for armed robbery. Juliette learns that Sean is demanding an annulment rather than a divorce, and Rayna surprises Liam with genuine cowboy boots, now that he is officially part of the show. Juliette angrily declares that she will no longer perform "Love Like Mine," and Rayna, deciding not to head home for the election after all, is amused when Liam bluntly kicks Juliette off the stage when she overstays her rehearsal time. Gunnar, feeling guilty for never having visited Jason in prison, offers him some encouraging words about his post-jail future, and the brothers perform a song together. Liam informs Rayna that he is "not Deacon," despite her attempts to make him so, suggesting that she is scared of performing with someone new. Avery meets with Domino without Marilyn, and Domino tells him that she is simply trying to make more money for herself, rather than putting his career first. Juliette visits Sean in person and points out that a divorce is speedier than an annulment, but he declares that she deceived him and, as he only wishes to "truly" marry once, wants their mistake permanently erased.
Scarlett visits Deacon backstage at his show, but when Cy corners her and begins making inappropriate advances, Deacon rescues her and quits in anger. Liam and Juliette continue arguing as Gunnar learns that Jason has sold his guitar for drugs, clearly back to his old ways already. Jason accuses him of abandoning him during the robbery for which he was imprisoned, but Gunnar protests that he was a frightened teen and has regretted his actions ever since then. Rayna proudly introduces Liam to the excited San Diego crowd, and as Coleman and Teddy prepare for Election Night, Juliette changes her mind and performs "Love Like Mine." Avery reminds an indignant Marilyn that she "works for him" and states that he has signed a deal with Deacon, and Gunnar finally opens up to Scarlett about his family's troubles. Juliette sadly accepts the annulment on the grounds of "false representation," and Rayna changes her mind and flies home just in time to see Teddy officially deemed mayor. Tandy assumes that Lamar went ahead and fixed the election without Teddy's permission, but Lamar tells her that Teddy "pulled it off on his own." Later, Peggy secretly visits Teddy to congratulate him, assuring him that her overdose was a mistake, and the two are barely able to resist their attraction to one another once again.
