GOTHAM: SPIRIT OF THE GOAT (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic fantasy series about the crooks and crimefighters of Gotham City in the years before Batman's reign. In this episode, ten years earlier, a masked criminal calling himself "the Spirit of the Goat" kidnaps a young woman, Shelly Lawson. A younger Bullock and his partner Dix find the culprit's lair, but when Bullock ignores Dix's "no heroes" rule and storms in, he finds Shelly already dead. The kidnapper, Randall Milkie, attacks them, and Dix suffers a devastating fall as Bullock shoots Milkie dead. In the present, Bullock arrives at a crime scene at which wealthy eldest child Amanda Hastings has been killed in a very familiar way, and he angrily tells Nygma that the Goat has a copycat. Elsewhere, Gordon argues with Barbara about his secretiveness, and she begs him to "give her half" of his burden. Montoya is elated to find a witness placing Gordon at the scene of Cobblepot's "death," and Bullock questions the Hastings, though family therapist Dr. Marks explains that the father has "a very delicate nature" and cannot handle the tragedy. Nygma searches for the files on the original Goat case and pesters the clerk, Kristen Kringle, with strange questions, noting that "humor is so important."
Bullock and Gordon discover that Amanda's abductor likely had access to her home, and Cobblepot visits his mother Gertrude, who is convinced that he has been off with "some hussy." He complains that he has been treated badly as of late, vowing to "be somebody" in Gotham soon. During the autopsy, Bullock is upset when a penny is found stitched into Amanda's head, as that detail was held back during the original investigation. Alfred suggests that he and Bruce leave town, as Bruce is also a wealthy firstborn, but Bruce refuses and continues his work. Kristen is baffled to find that Nygma has rearranged her entire office as some sort of token of affection, and she declares that he is "so odd." Bullock and Gordon visit the elderly Dix, who swears that he never revealed the penny detail and suggests that they are dealing with a conspiracy, privately adding to Gordon that Bullock is a "loose cannon." Another young woman, Amber, is then grabbed in her home, and Bullock realizes that they have only hours to find her in time. Barbara finds Renee and begs her to "keep an open mind" about Gordon, but Renee tells her that he will soon be arrested and that staying by his side will get Barbara killed. Nygma finds a maintenance man, Raymond Earl, who had access to both Amanda and Amber's homes, and they track him to Milkie's former lair, suggesting that they were once partners. Gordon saves a barely-alive Amber, and Bullock arrests Earl.
Selina creeps through Wayne Manor at night, observing Bruce's complex research. Gertrude reminds Oswald to "trust no one," but he tells her that he has "a real friend" in Gordon. Bullock remains convinced that the Goat case is not solved, saying that "something found" both Milkie and Earl and inspired their strange behavior. Barbara demands answers from Gordon about Cobblepot and begs him to leave town with her, but he refuses to run and is arrested by Montoya and Allen. Bullock finds Dr. Marks again and accuses her of using hypnotherapy on Mr. Hastings as well as on Milkie and Earl, having noticed their similar compulsive mannerisms, and she admits that she engineered the kidnappings as an act of "negative reinforcement" for Gotham's upper classes. She tries to order Mr. Hastings to kill Bullock, but Bullock fights him off and ends up shooting Marks in the leg before arresting her. Essen is shocked when Montoya and Allen arrive at the station house with Gordon in tow and promptly arrest Bullock too as his accomplice, but Gordon's "victim," Cobblepot, suddenly arrives in their midst, alive and well.
