NURSE JACKIE: HEALTH CARE AND CINEMA {SEASON ONE FINALE} (TV)

Summary

One in this drama series about a drug-addicted nurse in New York City who's beset by personal and professional problems.

Kevin tells Jackie that he has a “big surprise” for her after work, and that she should come to the bar at midnight to see what it is. As soon as Jackie leaves the bar, Eddie enters and starts ordering drinks. Gloria tries to talk to Neil, who is still in a coma. She tells Jackie that she is initiating an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his coma before he gets sent to intensive care. She demands that Jackie and Zoey report to her office immediately in order to issue an official statement. However, Gloria’s plans are cut short when the elevator malfunctions with her still inside, leaving her stranded. Zoey speaks to Neil, apologizing for giving him the incorrect medication dosage and triggering his coma. She and Jackie make it a point to ignore Gloria’s calls for help and not get her any sort of assistance. Dr. Cooper approaches Jackie and talks to her in private, believing that she broke her own finger as a means of getting closer to him, and that they have “great chemistry” together. She calls him a “moron,” gives him a kiss, and then walks off.

Zoey, Mo-Mo, and Thor are on hand when a young woman enters the hospital in order to treat an accidental removal of a portion of her hair sustained in a salon. Zoey gives her some helpful advice and she requests that Zoey be her nurse, although Zoey cannot do so owing to her suspension. Meanwhile, Eddie continues to spend time at Kevin’s bar and mentions his relationship with Jackie, although without specifically identifying her. Dr. O’Hara informs Jackie that she is having her comatose mother flown in from London that night and needs her help in order to falsify documents and admit her as a Jane Doe. Neil shows signs of coming out of his coma and Jackie instructs her staff to keep Gloria in the elevator, hoping to dodge a lawsuit upon Neil’s awakening. Gloria starts going stir-crazy in the elevator. Jackie has difficulty operating the Pill-O-Matix and leaves a voice message for Eddie to ask for his assistance. Zoey continues to act dour around the staff and Jackie tells her to lighten up. Zoey feels guilty for nearly killing Neil, but Jackie says that easing her conscience is a purely selfish act that does nothing for the patient.

Eddie continues to drink at Kevin’s bar and make conversation with him, ignoring phone calls from Jackie. Dr. Cooper and Mo-Mo discuss their respective relationship problems while tending to a patient, and Dr. Cooper decides to help Mo-Mo. Kevin shows Eddie the ring he got for Jackie, which he plans to give to her that night. The elevator is finally repaired and Gloria gets out of it. Jackie continues to futz with the Pill-O-Matix, causing a number of error messages. Dr. Cooper takes a photograph of himself kissing Mo-Mo, hoping to use it to make Randy jealous. Mo-Mo realizes that Dr. Cooper is attracted to Jackie. Neil awakens and Zoey is on hand. He seems to be feeling fine, and Zoey is immensely relieved that he has recovered. She apologizes to him again, but he reveals that he heard her apologies while he was in his coma. It quickly becomes apparent that Neil’s knowledge of and preferences for films have altered drastically due to his coma, and Zoey feels guilty that she “broke” him. Eddie arrives at the hospital and loudly announces his presence. Jackie and Gloria try to get him to leave, instantly realizing that he is inebriated. He leaves, but not before whispering to Jackie that he met Kevin, which greatly disturbs her. Dr. O’Hara is left with her mother, and feels extremely emotional in her presence. Jackie uses the Pill-O-Matix to secure three vials of morphine sulfate, and she goes to an unused examination room to consume all of them. She lies down on the ground and experiences a bizarre hallucination before awakening and seeing what appears to be a rat crawling around in a light fixture.
