BOARDWALK EMPIRE: SUNDAY BEST (TV)

Summary

One in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition. In this episode, on Easter Sunday 1923, Eli carefully hides eggs around his family home as Gillian instructs Richard to empty the Artemis Club of all employees and staff, claiming that she feels too ill to celebrate the holiday. When he departs with Tommy, however, she welcomes her younger lover Roger McAllister, the drifter she met on the boardwalk. Nucky, Margaret, Emily and Teddy head to Eli's, where the children meet their many cousins for the first time, and Richard takes Tommy to the Sagorsky household, where Paul and Julia are hosting a dinner for a few of the Legion Hall veterans. June offers an emotional speech about her gratitude to Nucky and her contentment at the arrival of her extended family, though tensions remain between Nucky and Eli. Julia, annoyed by her father's blunt comments, tactfully invites Richard into the kitchen, aware that he is embarrassed to eat in front of others.

In New York City, Tonino's attempts to talk business with Gyp before dinner are interrupted by the formidable Rosetti women. Roger and Gillian enjoy a romantic day alone, with Roger suggesting that they depart Atlantic City for good together, and as the Thompson and Schroeder children hunt for eggs, Margaret confides to an uncomfortable June that she is deeply unhappy, aware Nucky partakes in many criminal activities and has a mistress in the city. Paul complains about politics as Tommy wanders away from the table and find the late Fred's former bedroom, and Eli finally tells his brother that he cannot "survive" his ongoing punishment for his betrayal, angrily suggesting that Nucky should simply kill him and be done with it. Gillian tells Roger that her "husband" simply disappeared one day and never returned, and a drunken Paul is furious when he catches Tommy playing with his son's toys, leading a protective Richard to threaten his life. Paul throws the guests from his home, and Richard gathers his courage and urges Julia to depart with them. The Thompson family members perform their annual "talent show," and Margaret is charmed when Nucky gets up and performs some vaudevillian comedy to amuse the children.

Richard and Julia's bond deepens as they stroll on the boardwalk with Tommy, agreeing that the meal was less than successful, and a passing photographer mistakes them for a married couple with their son as he ushers them into an affection pose. Gyp visits a church and furiously rails at God, demanding an "explanation" for his unsatisfying life, and he ends up attacking and robbing the priest when he intervenes. Gillian entices Roger into a hot bath, but she surprises him with a syringe full of "lovely heroin" and calmly drowns him when the drugs take effect, then placing Jimmy's army tags around his neck. Masseria summons Gyp and scolds him for his reckless behavior, but Gyp passionately declares that he will kill Nucky, Luciano and Rothstein, leaving Masseria as the sole "king." Back at home, Margaret notes that she enjoyed seeing Nucky's kind side with the children, but sadly admits that it is "too late" to renew their former relationship. Affected by her words, he calls Eli and promotes him to run the distillery alongside Doyle, thanking him for smoothing things over in Tabor Heights. Richard pastes the portrait into his scrapbook as Gillian visits to inquire about his day with Tommy. She then emotionally tells him that which they both already know – that her son is dead and will never return – and Richard is startled by the girls' screams as they discover "Jimmy's" body in the tub.
