One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media’s 2015 William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. The festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television’s creative community. This PALEYFEST 2015 seminar honors “Scandal,” a drama/political thriller about the Pope & Associates crisis management firm in Washington D.C.
Jimmy Kimmel (host, Jimmy Kimmel Live) moderates the following panelists: cast members Joshua Malina (David Rosen), Darby Stanchfield (Abby Whelan), Jeff Perry (Cyrus Beene), Bellamy Young (Mellie Grant), Tony Goldwyn (President Fitzgerald Grant III), Kerry Washington (Olivia Pope), Scott Foley (Jake Ballard), Guillermo Diaz (Huck), and Katie Lowes (Quinn Perkins).
The panelists touch on such topics as: the cast’s propensity for playing practical jokes on each other; their favorite lines of dialogue from the show; fan reactions to the show, including various responses on Twitter; the cast’s first days on set and how they worked to determine their characters and adjust to the “Scandal pace”; the trust they place in the show’s executive producer and creator, Shonda Rhimes; unusual interactions between the cast and fans of the show; and “Scandal’s” allusions to and commentary about real-world issues.
Questions from the audience lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: the recent guest appearance of former cast member Henry Ian Cusack (Stephen Finch); the sense of “loyalty” engendered by the cast; the cast’s favorite television shows; Goldwyn’s thoughts on a particularly emotional episode for him; Washington’s opinions on the racial identity of her character; and the issue of whether or not the female characters on the show are “role models” or not.
